well my dad got me a prepaid visa card when i was a kid. i think it was good for both of us b/c i wouldn't always need to ask him for money and could monitor what i was buying and decide how much to put in.
there's my 2 cents. |

I got a visa gift card for Christmas last year. That was awesome. I used it online to buy myself some clothes. All prepaid. You should look into it. |

Our teenagers (one girl one boy) both got Visa Buxx cards this last year. Go to their website www.visabuxx.com and check it out. Whats great is that everytime they make a purchase, we get an email showing the charge and what it was for, AND we can reload it from our checking accounts. The fees are much better than any other card out there. Customer service is outstanding and the kids can manage their accounts online. PLUS you can set up alerts for when their balance gets low or if they purchase a high dollar item. I highly highly recommend it. |

I think in this day and age, I think it is a very smart thing to let your kid have some kind of prepaid card, but many of these answers are right....you have to check the fees. Here are the reasons why the prepaid card is good:
1) It's safer than carrying cash
2) will allow the both of you to track his spending and teach about budgeting and the costs of plastic
3) most popular retailers have their best deals that teens would want online and the plastic allows him to spend money online (amazon, itunes, bestbuy, etc.)
4) teaches him about using "plastic" before he can get into too much trouble and there is a limit to how much he can spend
5) Plastic is more used in our society today than cash is and will probably continue to do so because of the ease of use.
Best place is to look at your local bank. Credit Unions are the best place for teens to bank. Our local credit union does finance classes for teens. It's a very good program. |

Try going to your local bank and getting one of the VISA gift cards for him. Typically they are free with a specific amount of credit put on them. Then he can simply load the card online (via bank transfer) before he goes out and use it as he wants. It will also force him to budget his spending in advance. |

OK i got one of those for christmas.... the visa pre paid cards have tons of hidden fee's. Just to check your balance on the phone is 50 cents..
Pay-As-You-Go Customers
Signature Purchase Convenience Fee $1.00 (used as credit)
PIN Purchase Convenience Fee $2.00 (used as debit)
Card Fulfillment (Shipping & Handling) $9.95
and thats for EACH use
oh yeah they will give him a pin number for that card so he use it either way |

Do like I did, go to your bank and ask them about their student/teen prepaid bank card. I gave my teenage daughter a Visa Buxx card from US Bank and have had no problems with it for 4 years. |

hmm you should check out Bank of America. I got mine there and its a students card or something like that and it was free to open it (they even gave me 25$) and its a savings and checking account. I can use it pretty much everywhere and their customer savings is amazing.
Either way if you decide to open it or not you have to make sure where he is wasting his money, at that age, he probably wants it to buy stuff on the internet for online games. |

any major bank, i like ent the best but you can do us bank or first bank. debit cards dont cost anything to start up and you can use them as credit cards. mine from ent is a visa and i can use it anywhere.
be careful though you can overdraw debit cards now :( just think of them as a credit card.
I highly recommend this though my parents did this for me when i was 8 and im very good with money |

I say you are the parent...you have to decide what's best. That he will have a card at all is a privilege not a RIGHT. You have to find the best deal and he will have to live with it. Better to have a card that works at MOST locations than to have no card at all! |

Personally if my son asked me for one, I would tell him I would use my card to make purchases over the internet for him. There is usually a disclaimer" Get your parents permission first" |

This is actually a question that you as a parent should decide on your own. You have to know your child and see if he's responsible enough.
Think of the advantages and disadvantages of giving him his own debit card.
Advantage: He'll learn how to manage money at in early age. Money management and responsibility is something that they don't really teach you in schools so this might be a great way to start. For a month you may be able to give him a certain amount. For example, calculate his monthly needs and what he NEEDS to pay for - at his age lunch and personal expenses. At 15 he shouldn't need that much. This way, he'll learn to budget and know that he can't blow all his money in one week because he does have a limit.
Disadvantage: If your child is the type to easily persuade you and gets basically anything he asks for, then don't do it. He'll end up taking advantage of this opportunity and you will end up loosing money. And by not knowing how to budget and shop freely as he wants, this can turn into habit when he gets older.
If you are allowing him to have one, set a limit, set rules, and make consequences. The tough part now is just deciding what's best. |

if he has a job then he deserves it. if he wants the money from you to be put on a card then no. I got a debit card when i was 15, but only because i had a job. if its his money he won't spend it so frivoulusly, also cash is easier spent then anything on cards. speaking from expierence, Yes if he earned the money (not recieved from parents) No is he was given it |

I don't know any 15 year olds with a credit card, I'm not a parent but you can just tell him no and be over it or get one and tell him he's paying everything and see if he's responsible. |
|

monkey
|
i would definitely NOT recommend this until he has a far better understanding about money. if he really wants to buy something he should ask you and you can enter the necessary information - or not. |

how about just some cash and if ordering online use a credit card you have to monitor spending put as an authorized user |
|

Only if all the funding is earned by him, otherwise forget it. He just wants to be able to buy stuff on-line, which at 15 his on-line access should be limited anyway. Tell him when he is earning his own income then you will discuss it with him. |

Well, I want a new car, but we don't always get what we want now do we. He's 15. Tell him to get a job. Then he can have anything he wants as long as he pays for it. If you end up paying for it, as I see it, he doesn't have a choice. |
