My mother owes a Jcpennys $300. She lied to me telling me she owed nothing. I refuse to talk to her and decide
d to let her handle her own stuff . I don't help with the house chores and stuff like that. I am 14 she is 42. Am I doing the right thing?
Additional Details
I try to give her my advice but she refuses to hear it.

My Father makes enough money to pay it off(this is no lie,he makes 90,000 a year). But she refuses to tell him about it. and no he isn't abusive. and no I am not a messy person.

I guess that depends. Frankly, if I was your mother, I'd tell you it wasn't any of your business how much I owe JC Penny. Why do you care?

That said, I don't think parents should lie to their children. You two should try to work it out, but it sounds like you are being kind of extreme in this case.

You should at least help out with household chores. How would you feel if you had to tell your son/daughter about owning money? Give her a break, and try and help her out.

In the long run, you will be very glad that you did this. A parent's love isn't worth playing with.

Good Luck, and do the right thing. If you must ask a question like this then you must know that you are at least in part wrong.

It sounds like your mother is immature and needs your help. Don't ignore her, try to get her some help.

I didn't realize how old you were Matt. I was going to tell you to go back to the question you just answered. Oops, didn't know you were still a child. By the way, as long as you live in your moms household, YOU WILL do your chores and yes you need to stay out of your moms business!!

cyanne2ak
No you aren't doing the right thing at all. She should not lie to you, but it's HER money. You are no better than she is when you act the way you are acting.

What am I missing here?

Is the Jcpenny card late? Has she made payments? Are you on the card? What business is it of yours?

Does your father live with you, or separated/divorced?

Just tell your father your concerns.

big-dee-jay@sbcglobal.net
I hate to say this but you are only 14. She is your mother & it is her right as an adult to have credit cards & owe money to whomever she wishes. AS the adult in the house it is also her responsibility to be sure & not LIE to you as well. I believe you are both wrong.
On one hand, she should not have lied to you, I give you that. On the other hand, you are her SON & you should be responsible to do your share of the house hold chores.

I also believe it is none of your business! You live there you should help with the chores. One has nothing to do with the other!

Please understand I am not trying to hurt your feelings, this is just the way it is.

Your mother's finances are none of your business. Don't ask her about them and she won't lie to you. Parents do not have an obligation to tell their kids such matters, and really shouldn't anyway. Kids have their own stuff to worry about. Just because she doesn't want to share that information with you doesn't mean she's not paying it.

You should help her with the chores, since I'm sure you help her make the mess.

tynidevil
How do you know she ACTUALLY lied to you? Maybe she already paid it ($300 is not a lot), is paying on it, or ACTUALLY does not owe ANYTHING? Your 14 and while I understand your concern, you are making WAY too big a deal about this. It's not a lot of money, it is not really any of your business (How did you find out anyway?), and even if she died lie it may not have been malicous. Think about it: What if it were a suprise for you or your father? You just RUINED it! What if it was a mistake by JC Penny? I take it you found out about this ALLEGED debt thru some kind of snooping. In that case, you have violated her trust for you MORE than your trust for her. She's your mom, give her a break AND HELP DO THE CHORES! How can you honestly be mad at her for this and you are acting like a baby?

Help out with the chores and pick better battles in the future. You're still maturing and trust me, there will be a lot more serious things for you and your mom to talk about other than a $300 bill. This one ain't worth it.
