My son is 18, and he was approved for a credit card faking his age without my knowledge. What do I do?
Before I knew it, he's already over-spent it and I don't know how to pay it, since we're not rich. Is there also a fault on the cc company's part. Because they've approved his application without further inquiry about his age? Help....

Repo...sell his stuff on eBay...pay back credit card company.

Swordfish
First of all its not your problem but your son's. In addition; I would make him pay every penny as a lesson. This is a prime opportunity to let him learn and examine the consequences of not disciplining his spending habits. Good luck!

That's a very serious situation! All the stuff which your son bought have to go back... As for your son, ground him until he learned a very important lesson of credit cards... By the way, does your son knows how a credit card works???

infinitefair
nothing let him mess up his credit and learn for himself. that's what i had to do.. now i appreciate the importance of paying my bills on time

futurefixfriend
Let them put him in jail for fraud.

Trollhair
If he is over 18 you are not responsible for his debts.
Let him pay for it himself.
Make him get a job.
Sell his car.
Sell his personal belongings to pay for the debt.
Do NOT pay off his debts. Once you start he will never learn responsibility and will continue being a burden to you for the rest of his life expecting YOU to pay his bills.
He made the debt, make him pay for it.
I say a yard sale is in order this weekend.

You do have a problem. If he got it while still under age then you can be held responsible. You have to cancel the card either by talking to the card company or by letter. I would suggest in writing would be better as there will be a record that way. Keep a copy of the letter. Your sun also is responsible even under age and can be charged with fraud. Not a good spot to be in but in most case4s if you are polite and show you want to do things properly the company most likely will help you figure out what to do. They would rather have their money than any legal mater. Also be aware that this could cause problems with your credit rating. Your son needs to have some very strict terms put on him and he should be the one to pay the bill. In many places 18 is the legal age and if he was 18 at the time he applied then he definitely is legally at fault and can be charged.

bluerosebud1976
unfortunately, he is already 18 and screwing up his credit. If he is already out of high school, make him get a job and help with the bills. Try and look up some smart tips on the Internet to give him so that he learns to spend more wisely. If my son did that I would make him get a job and help pay it back. Even if he is still in school, a job would hurt. Hopefully he learns more responsibility this way. good luck

If he was over 18 at the time of the debt he has to pay it back.

The credit card company would have pulled a Credit Reprot and verified is age being over 18 before issuing the card. If he falsly stated his age, this is fraud, which means if he was under 18, but lied, then they can come after you for the balance. You as parents are responsible for EVERYTHING you minor child does.

Good luck!

gail_hurd
Contact the credit card company straight away - they are definitely at fault, I don't believe they can make your son pay the debtas his signature wasn't legal being under 18.

I once heard about a three year old who got sent a pre-approval letter, her mum sent it off as a joke then gave the credit card company hell when they actually sent her three year old daughter the credit card.

Marj
He is 18 and legally obligated to pay it himself. Since he faked his age it will most likely lower his credit score. Contact a lawyer specializing in brokerage/credit/bankrupcy to see what you can do.

Riss
he is an adult and didnt need your consent.

Mr Hex Vision
Legally as hes 18, they can't pass the bill onto you.

Now if the company approved his application without further inquiry about his age, then you may find that the its the companies fault and that you may not have to pay anything.

But I'm no judge of the law, you better go and talk to a lawyer or someone who knows about these things, maybe a watchdog or other like group.

He is responsible. 18 and all. You shouldn't pay, he needs to learn to stand on his own 2 feet. Tell him to talk with the credit company to set up a payment arrangement and cancel the card.

Erica
contact the credit card company immediately and make them aware. he is 18, which is legal age for a credit card, so he will be responsible for the charges. perhaps you can explain the situation to the cc company and they might allow lower payments but your son is ultimately responsible since he's an adult of 18.

juju69
take it off him cut it up and phone the credit card company and explain the situation

kr0nox
you compliment him on his inteligents you have a smart son.Good job

Meet a lawyer, issue them a legal notice that your son wants to pay it but doesnt have a job so need 2-3 years for paying it off or your son is wiling to pay it but not more than Rs. 200/- per month or so as he doesn't have a job.

More or less the same thing happened with me. I did the same thing as I had lost my job at that time. They called me & said you have to pay high interest I said ok fine I want to go to the court then that inspite of giving you the correct picture you people are still harrassing me. Then they collection manager agreed for Rs. 250/- per month.

Be confident and dont get afraid by their legal advisors mails which might give you some tension. Those letters cannot harm you but can only give you tensions. Dont forget to onsult a lawyer.
