My son owes $25,000.00?
My son who was a former addict, managed to open credit cards in my name and now owes 25 thousand which I have to pay because we share the same name. He managed to get a hold of my SSN and used it to get charge cards, now dad is stuck with the bill. How can I get out of this debt or at least manage it. I dont want to stick him with it because he is in rehab, working on his recovery and the stress will only hinder him. So whats my best option at paying down this debt and controlling it?

You're lucky it's only $25,000. Our son ran up close to $200,000 over 10 years before we put a stop to it. We took out several loans to pay them off. If you do not want to go after him for the money, the next best thing to do is to put it on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus. It has to be renewed every 90 days in order to keep it active.

You can't get rid of it unless you file police reports, dispute it and are willing to finger your son as the criminal. I'm sorry to hear of his troubles, but you are enabling his unacceptable behavior by agreeing to assume this debt. There could be more out there that you don't even know about yet.

The only way to get rid of the debt altogether is to file disputes, but then you probably already know he ends up prosecuted as a criminal for it.
If you're going to adopt the debt, I would just try to negotiate some terms with the card company if they will listen to you and get the rates down. Pay it down as fast as possible.

Your other question says that you're 29.. so I'm going to guess that you're a liar (most probable) or that your son is an addict at 13 or younger (not likely). You mean to say that you never noticed your credit card bills or that this was done within a month? They let a kid take out that much in cash advances?
If your son is a juvenile, he's not likely to go thru harsh sentencing so you might as well report him and clear your name. Let's face it, if he's that bad at such a young age, you won't be able to handle him anyways and being locked up is probably in his best interest.. they don't tend to get tamer in the teens. If for real, it would most likely be a crack habit, and crack addicts are very prone to doing violent and tremendously irresponsible things. I'm not saying that people can't get off crack, because they can, but it's a rather strong addiction from what I hear. A few weeks in a rehab isn't likely to change a person with that strong or chronic of an addiction.

Yikes, I would call the credit reporting agencies and fight that it isnt yours and have it removed from your credit report. Then it will be moved over to your sons. I did a mortgage for someone who had a bunch of credit that belonged to his daughter on his and he got it removed. Then contact the creditors and try and work on a payment plan that works for all if you want to continue to pay so you dont screw him over anymore.

If your son is over 18, that is his problem.

I would challenge the creditors if he is a legal adult and state that you are not legally responsible for his debts.

You are certainly not responsible for any debt when fraud (identity theft) occurred.

Place a block on all your cards where ID must be shown for any use.

I don't have any sympathy for addicts. Virtually all addicts tend to be repeat offenders. Don't fall victim and keep on rescuing him from his crimes. You have to allow him to fail and learn from his lessons.

You may want to discuss this with an attorney for legal options and your rights.

Your son committed fraud. You should have him arrested. You do not owe the money your son does. He signed your name and unless the credit card companies can prove otherwise, which they cannot you are not liable for these bills. Send a certified letter return receipt to each company stating the fact that you did not open these cards, your son did and therefore you are not liable. The website below will help you, I suggest you email Dave Ramsey, he will be able to point you in the right direction. Your son is a thief. You don't owe the money pure and simple.

I recommend debt settlement . Total Debt Solutions partners with a company in Texas called Credit Results USA to offer debt settlement. Credit Results USA has been in business for years and is listed with the BBB. My dad used them with great results getting debt free in 36 months. He held the money in a trust account; this isn't just sending money to some faraway company each month and saying a prayer that you dont get ripped off. Check out the source website and their free evaluation form or toll free number; they can help!
