My visa check/debit card?
ok so i was at walmart ready to buy a videogame today..
it was $130 when my account only has like $20, but i thought it would go through and i can pay at the end of the month.
so i swipe the machine, put in my pin, and then it would not let me pay!
so what is wrong?? am i not allow to do this credit thing with my check/debit card?
Additional Details
so does this mean i have an option of using it as debit or credit card?
i didnt see it on the machine though.. or do i tell the clerk that?

you can run your debit card as credit and it will delay your transaction for a couple of days, it wont delay it til the end of the month. but since its initially a debit card it will use the funds in your bank account to pay for the transaction. so if you're trying to buy a $130 product & you only have $20 in your bank account, your card will be denied either way because you dont have enough funds to cover the purchase... the reason some people run a debit card as credit is because SOME small businesses charge a fee for using your debit card so if you run it as credit the store doesnt charge a fee

A visa check card is simply a debit card for your checking account that has the advantage of being taken at all stores that take Visa credit cards. It is not a traditional credit card, and it is extremely unwise to buy things that you don't have the funds for. If you use the credit option, and you have overdraw protection on your account, the transaction might go through, but you would have to pay the overdraft fees to your bank. They are not pretty.

No, the debit card it based on how much money you deposit into your account. Only CREDIT cards work the other way.

Here is the thing, when you use the debit card it takes straight from your account. But if you press credit and use the debit card ot will take a few days to pass. Only credit cards are paid at the end of the month. Hope this helps.

if you dont have a credit line backing up the atm/ debit card then that means it is only linked with your checking account. And if it is only linked with your checking then that is dependent on how much money you have in it. The only way the transaction would go thru without money in your account is if you have your bank open up a credit card account linked with your atm/debit card. Just because your card has a visa or mastercard logo on it doesn't mean it is a credit card. That just means that it can be processed through retailers that accept credit cards. Because some retailers don't take atm cards that require you to put in a PIN code. But they do take credit cards which require your signature as a promise to pay.

If you do have a credit card account linked with your card then you have to press the credit button on the ATM pad when you are paying for you item.

Hope this helps.

Yes and no. No becuase when you swipe the card, the company checks to see if your account has money, if not then your card will be declined. Yes because Banks process transactions at the end of the business day or whenever the merchant batches their machine (requests their charges to be paid),which is usually end of the day, but in many cases your account may have $50 in a day and yet you can make more than one $50 purchase because the Bank may not know you you've already made a purchase. So if it was the case you only had $130, you might get to buy one game here and next minute buy another game at another store and both may still go through. But in the case you did not have enough money then sorry "declined".

But if you had overdraft protection, then the transaction will go through because another account will cover the non-sufficient fund.

A check/debit card will only allow to spend what you have in your case $20. You can't borrow on it. So the payment of $130 was refused. To do that kind of stuff you need a credit card. Which will allow you to have a credit up to certain limit depending on your credit history and financial condition.

What you are thinking of is France. They have what is called a deferred debit card. You can purchase up to a certain amount then you have to pay the bank back at the end of the month. The United States to my knowledge does not have this type of deferred debit card.

U.S. debit cards that have a Visa or MasterCard symbol
Can be used at least two ways. A pin transaction you would select ATM/debit or a signature transaction you would select credit button than sign for your purchase. Either way it comes out of your account right away.

Some banks would let you go over but charge you a bunch of fees. Other banks won't unless you have overdraft protection.

If you have to enter a 'pin', then your card is a debit card. Debit cards work on checking accounts, and if you don't have the cash in your checking account, the sale won't go through, period'.

Ok, actually it's not as much your fault, as it is your cashier's. They have to press credit option, instead of debt option. Once they do that , your card will go through, and it depends on your bank, how they will pay to walmart, and how they will get their money from you or how fast, usually they can be pretty nasty. But, just remember, WHENEVER you are putting your pin in, it's your debit card working and not the credit card. Credit card option never requires a pin.
