I just recently found out my wife opened 2 credit cards under my name without telling me. She's been taken money out of those credit cards for gamble. And she didn't make payment on those credit cards, so one is past due for 30 days, another is past due for 90 days, and they both went over the credit limit. I called credit companies to have them closed, but my credit's been damaged so badly. I had 714 before now my credit score dropped to 485. My question is after I paid off those credit cards debt, how long will it take to get my score back to normal? For instance, at least around 600. Please help, thanks!
P.S. I don't wanna get my wife into trouble, so I didn't report it as identity theft.

With my score now 480 something, will I able to rent an apartment in the future? I've always paid my rent on time. |

If you don't want to report this to the police, fine. But what you can do to protect yourself in the future is to notify the credit bureaus that you want to be notified of any new inquires. Call Trans Union Fraud Dept @ 1-800-680-7289 and have it put on Fraud Alert. You don't have to tell them it's your wife causing these problems. Best of luck. |

take away those credit cards from her
another thing, it would be good for you to be the only one handling the mail and shredding all credit card applications that you receive from now on, ( if u ever receive more again )
you need to talk to her, and put your foot down, and give her an option, of paying those credit cards or getting professional help |

I was going to answer until you said you would not report the fraud to the police dept. Then I figure it might mot be without your permission.
If you want the companies to work with you in removing the bad marks you will HAVE to report this to the police and have a police file to send to the CC companies.
Why are you shooting for 600 if anticipation of buying a house forget about it?
You need to get the black marks removed by calling this waht it is theft and use of you ID! |

If it has dropped that low there may be other cards out there that you don't know about yet. What are doing with the wife situation. She will not stop unless things are taking seriously and you report them to the credit card companies. Make sure to tell them that to only talk to you and tell them to make sure nothing else gets opened without your permission. You really have to work on it with your wife. She is the problem right now. Counseling should help or gamblers anonomous. |

If you don't press charge her then you just have to put up with it. However, you can get an identity theft protection from any credit card company. It costs $12.99 a month. When someone opens an account, they will notify you. They also send you 3 credit reports from 3 agencies 3 times a year.
Continue paying on time and keep an eye on her. No one knows for sure how long it will take to bring back your good standing.
If you can't trust someone you married to, how can you trust her in anything else that she does? I would put a tight leash on her. What kind of a person would do this to their spouse is beyond me. |

Only time will tell... there's no exact answer on how long it will take. Depends on how many "good" accounts you still have open and if you're paying on them.
I signed up for identityguard.com. You get a free credit report plus monthly monitoring. They have a "simulator" where you can see how certain actions / length of time will affect your score. |

There's no way to tell exactly how long it will take. Do all the right things to boost the credit again. Pay off the cards and keep a small amount of credit that you pay early. I suspect it may take a year or so. Good luck! |
