I am a college student and am considering getting my first credit card now. Is there any way to guarantee a credit approval?
I get financial aid paying for my college tuition. I work part-time and earn cash. How much should I fill in the annual income so it would not affect my financial aid but get the credit approval? (one card that I applied before requires a 15,000 annual income. But i can't possibly put in 15,000 as my income because that's false information. Do you always have to be honest in the application?) |

thanks to deregulation, you have nothing to worry about! If you are still concerned, be honest with the lender and accept a lower credit allowance. |

You don't have to do anything honestly technically.
But if you lie and they find out (WHICH THEY ABSOLUTELY WILL!), they will slaughter your credit score. :( |

There is no way to guarantee approval. And falsifying will guarantee trouble down the line. |

BE CAREFUL! Credit card companies are known for preying on college students for the simple reason that they know students don't make much money, and are likely to run up large credit card bills and be unable to pay them off every month - thus guaranteeing the credit card company will make MEGA bucks off you in interest every year as you struggle to pay the debt off.
And YES you need to be honest on the application. The days of lying about your job, income, etc. are over. They check. They pull your credit report and if your job is not listed there, they may call the place you said that you work to check if you're employed and if your stated income was accurate.
If you don't have the income to support a credit card right now, don't get it. Trust me, in the long run, you will be very sorry you did. Wait until you have more solid income and will be able to afford to pay off whatever you buy on the credit card every month. |

OK So I got accepted for my first credit card through my bank. If you have a bank account, get a credit card from them, because they are more willing to accept you. And they know your income. I had like 5,000 a year income and got a credit card for 600. When I spent that and paid it off they made it 1200. So I suggest for your first card is through your bank. Because you will most likely get declined from stores credit cards. I get denied from them ALL , Macys, old navy, target, etc. Declined becuase "insufficient credit history". So to build credit, research your bank. Good Luck! |

Fill out the application honestly. You'll need income and a good credit score to start. |

you don't have to be 100% honest on these credit card applications. you should be truthful in your name, ss#, dob (date of birth) and such but not on the income portion of it. they may ask you what the household income is, not your income. when i first started applying for credit cards in college, i just put my approximate household income...my dad, mom, me and siblings combined. they don't check and also this has NOTHING to do with your financial aid. you will most likely only get approved for $500.00 or so depending on your credit score. if you don't have any credit, you will either get denied or get a lower credit limit. nothing serious, but don't spend too much on it and focus on trying to pay off the balance as soon as possible and stay under 50% of total credit limit. that will help you build good credit. and most importantly, PAY ON TIME! |

Yes you need to be completely honest while filling out the app. The reason for this isn't just for the credit card companies benefit it is for your protection as well. While having a credit card can be a boon it can also lead to your ultimate destruction, much like walking down the dark path a long long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
In your situation the best place to fill out an application would be at your local credit union. The people there should have your best interest at heart and should be able to answer any other questions that you may have.
If you are feeling inpatient you can check out http://www.creditcardguide.com/ you can in the left pain select your credit situation and find a card that's right for you.
Good Luck |
