Negative things come off my credit report in 7 years?
what exactly does that mean?
my credit identity was stolen 3-5 years ago and i have 40+ account opened without my knowledge. I didn't notice until 2 years ago and anyway... I've been hearing that the negative marks come off of your credit report in 7 years. from when? the last time the account was used? when it was charged off? I heard that when you contact the collection agency or lender then that re-opens the 7 years... so, when the accounts were last used in 2003 and i didnt notice until 2006, didnt contact them until 2007 to gain information and dispute the account, did that change the year its removed from 2010 to 2014?

Any info will help, I'm so lost.

The credit bureaus keep your personal credit history for periods between 7 and 10 years:
Unpaid Tax Lien - Indefinitely
Chapter 7 Bankruptcies - 10 years from date filed.
Public Records - 7 years from the date of payment;
Closed or Inactive Accounts - 10 years from the date of last activity;
Derogatory Accounts - 7 years from the date of original delinquency;

As of December 29, 1997 the reporting period runs 7 ½ years (7 years plus 180 days) from the date (month and year) of the last delinquency (known as "last missed payment:).
So, regardless of how long a creditor waits to charge off, sell or transfer a debt, they must report the true and correct "delinquent or last missed payment" date (month and year) that preceded the creditor's action.

Running of Reporting Period - Section 605 [15 U.S.C. § 1681c]

Some creditors will re-date a debt to keep it on ones credit report, this is ILLEGAL as per 15USC1681s-2] § 623. Responsibilities of furnishers of information to consumer reporting agencies

Hope this is of help to you

You can get the negative items off within 90 days if you dispute it. Buy a good credit repair book (dont go to those agencys that charge hundreds of dollars) You will probably have to contact the police if you didnt when you first noticed it so you have a report to show the collection agencies. If you can get them to take it off it will only take about 30 days, otherwise you have to go thru Transunion, equifax and experian.

When it was charged off date to 7 years. The Collection agency does not have any right to report the debt on your report. They use to buy accounts and do that, but many of them got sued to the point where they can only claim to be a collection agency for the charge off and can't double report the same debt, without violating the credit reporting laws. The abuse was also linked to violating the FDCPA. If you find this on your credit report you can sue them for money and you would win in most cases. Contacting the Collection agency does not re-open the charge off date. If you heard this stuff from a collector, then they are lying to you, which isn't much of a surprise. Anyway, the credit reporting agencies do not want to get sued and don't double report charge offs because a collection agency sent it in and they know to evaluate this under the laws that govern them. In cases where you are sued to pay, it is highly illegal that a debt collection agency claims the same suite report as in double jeopardy.

Disputing or contacting the creditor does not reset the clock on their behalf. Only a payment on your part can do that. 2010 if not active since

All negative activity (for bankruptsy it's 10 years) will be removed within 7 years from LAST ACCOUNT ACTIVITY. This means the last payment made, settlement offer made,ect. As long as you haven't paid on them or anything they will drop from the last payment recieved or last charge initiated. Also, keep in mind that most companies will drop it off your credit before 7 years. There are also legal services that are fairly cheap (around $30 a month) that will get the negative marks off your credit. One is lexingtoncreditrevolution.com....Hope this helps and good luck!

as long as you are disputing you will be fine -they can only extend the statute of limitations(7 years) if you agree to any payment arrangement -keep fighting and keep on them !

firefiter
the negative stuff comes off when the debts are paid, and not one second before. if you dispute charges on your credit, and can prove that they're NOT your debts, then they have to be deleted immediately.
