New year and I want to start clearing my debt.. what are some good free debt management companies I can call?
My debt amounts to about 4000GBP.
I want to start cleaning up my credit file and clearing debits.

I need a decent free debt management company that won't take any of my money in order to help me.

I was with churchwood financial but they were taking some of my money each month from the money I was paying them to pay out all the companies I owed.

I just need a debt management company that can help me with out doing that. I have my credit file from experian and the other credit file company (forgot the name). So I know exactly who I owe and how much I owe them.

dont deal with ANY company for this. the citizens advice bureau will do this for free.

at least 2 people have posted adverts above, please ignore them.

I had my son set up two accounts. Part of his check goes into each one. A small acct for his 'allowance' and the larger to pay off bills. Then he set up auto debit with his creditors and was always on time. If the $ isnt in your hand, its a lot easier to save it.

a lot of debt management companies wont take you on unless you owe more than £15,000. my advice to you is to try to pay your debt. if you do not it will affect your credit rating and will stay on your file for 6 years! if you really feel that you are not in a position to pay off your debt, then the one and only company i would recommend is payplan. they have been helping me out for the last 6 months and i have found there help and advice invaluable and best of all they do not charge any fees whatsoever! PLEASE take my advice and get in touch with them if you feel you have nowhere left to turn.and don't go with anyone else.you will only end up getting ripped off as most companies pray on the weak and vulnerable as i have found out to my cost! don't make the same mistake as me. good luck to you! sorry i forgot to give you the number payplan 08448552163 remember whatever you do. DO NOT CALL ANYONE ELSE THIS IS THE ONLY COMPANY YOU SHOULD CONTACT AND THEY ARE GOVERNMENT FUNDED.

ok a few questions firs.. are you behind in your payments? if not, i would request a 5 decrease from the creditor, assuming this is cc debt. is it?
most companies charge a monthly fee now , and if the debt is only 4,000 its really not alot to sweat,

HUD provides a list of free credit counselors to people who are looking for a reverse mortgage (something available for folks 62 and over that lets them live in their homes w/o mortgage until their death). The require credit counseling session with one of these companies before approving a reverse mortgage, and they should be able to help you as well since they do all kinds of credit counseling.

Too many for-a-fee companies are a scam and you will be exposed to fraud. These companies are HUD-approved companies and provide credit counseling without a fee. I'm listing a couple below along with their phone numbers. Since the counseling is done on the phone (about 45 minutes), it's not important where they are located, but if you want information on more of them, email me. Never pay a fee for what you can do yourself with a little guidance.

I would go to citizens advise.

I had a 3k debt when I left uni, but I decided that the best option would be to work on it my way.

Sit down and work out your expenses and income, the dates when they come in and the anticipated amounts,. Start by increasing the payment on your biggest debt and work through them. It took me the best part of a year, but at the end of the day, it gave me a better idea of my finances.

Try the Citizen's Advice Bureau..their services are impartial and free.

I've never been in debt to anyone, but I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear. My suggestion on the road to sorting your financies out would be to manage it yourself, if you need someone else to sort it out you will never be in true control. It may seem a bit daunting at first but the figure you are talking about should be easily managed within 12 months by been thrifty and possibly taking on some additional work.

Good Luck

There's no secret to managing debt, and you can do it without paying extra fees.

1) Get a book and write down the following
Name of debtor
Balance
Minimum payment
Due Date

2) Chop up all your credit cards but ONE, for emergencies only and DONT carry it in your wallet or purse

3) Look at your monthly income and decide what you can afford to pay + 10-20%. NOT THE MINIMUM. Paying the minimum will take you 15 years to pay it off. Your goal is to get to below 2000 GBP before year end 2008

4) Start carrying a ledger of where you are spending money. Whether it's a package of chips or a tank or petrol - write it down, AND ONLY USE cash. Start looking for ways to cut out unnecessary expenses. Bring lunch instead of buying, for example.

It's a big pain in the backside to keep such good records, but ya cant know where it's going if ya dont watch where ya spend it !

I've just saved you about 1000 pounds in debt consolidator fees !

I promise it will work..

Good Luck mate and HNY!
