Wait 7 years and it will roll off. |

pay all of your utility bills on time regularly; apply for a secure line of credit w/ a credit card; use it at most once a month to charge something like gas (that you KNOW you will be able to pay when the bill comes); it may take a year or longer for your score to improve, but it will; good luck |

I had to get a card several years ago that had very pricey fees. I initially only got a 250.00 credit limit, but 200 of that was for "their fees", so I only had 50.00 to use, but but I paid the bill on-time every single month and it showed them that I was trustworthy enough to raise my limit and my credit score. I now hold a couple of unsecured cards. |

Time has to pass first....then get a secured credit card and use it...show that you can be responsible....after awhile you can get an unsecured credit card and by all means use it! I did the same thing years ago and got credit cards but they want you to use it. Demonstrate that you are responsible and your credit score will go up. |

You really need to take the time to review the consequences of filing Chapter 7 yourself. Leastwise your attorney should have apprised you of the benefits as well as the consequences concerning your credit situation. One thing is for certain. We are under a NEW set of Bankruptcy laws. The laws changed on October 17, 2005, just under a year ago. So what someone may have done BEFORE the new law went into effect has no import today.
But here is a start:
Go to Google
Type in: "Filing Chapter 7 under the new Bankruptcy Laws"
Hit the "Search" button.
You will find any number of sources that will help in answering your question. After your review of the various sources, and if you feel it is necessary to learn more, you can type the same question and add
" How does it affect my credit standing?"
You will find other sites that may be helpful also. And certainly the sites as offered by other answerers here will be of assistance also.
It is surprising that you filed (assuming that you had an attorney) and he/she did not advise you of the consequences of filing Chapter 7. Also, I thought it was required - in fact it IS required - that you speak with a counseling service before you made a decision as to whether or not to file bankruptcy in the first place. In fact most good Bankruptcy lawyers will give you a small booklet or flier which gives you general information about filing a Chapter 7 within which they address what will happen to your credit rating once you file Bankruptcy., and they will discuss it with you in your initial consultation.
Or did you file on your own?
Under the new law,. the Bankruptcy remains on your credit report for 10 years. If necesssary, Under the new law, in certain circumstances, You CAN also re-file eight years from the date of the first filing .
Under the new law, you will not necessarily be able to obtain a new credit card --- secure OR unsecured --within months, or even years after you file..
A lot will depend on what debts you are able to discharge and which ones you are still required to pay under the Plan.
If you filed on our own, you should really see a lawyer. |

Have patience... your bankruptcy can take up to 10 years to fall off your credit report. You can apply for loans as soon as you are discharged but at a high rate of interest. Creditors know you cannot file bankruptcy again so prison is the answer for people who get right back into debt. That thought usually motivates people to learn from their mistakes. You won't need credit if you have no bills so don't worry about your credit score... think more of a financial plan to pay cash and live within your means. |
