Ok credit but can't get a card?
My credit score is in the mid-600s (I forget what it is exactly) but I can't get a card because the balance on the card that I have is too close to the limit ($800 limit). I have been trying to pay down the card that I have, but every time I get it down a little they slap me with fees or fines that push it back up to or over the limit! I was thinking that if I could get a 2nd card, I could transfer some of the balance and then I would continue to pay off both of them (not adding anything else to either card).

Is there anyone out there who will issue me a card? Do you have another solution to help me out? Thanks so much!
Additional Details
When I got the card, I didn't understand about how credit cards work - I thought that if they gave me a limit, that was how much I was allowed to spend. Most of that $800 was investing in a home-business that didn't work out.

Now I understand more about how credit ratings and cards work (you are not supposed to have a balance of more than 1/2 your limit) but how do I get there!

I am looking for help and advice for this point forward - I know I am in a bad spot, I know what I did wrong, so please don't belabor the point, just help me figure out what to do from here.

You should try to clean up your credit a little bit (credit repair).

You should also try to pay your balance down to less than 30% of your limit and keep it under that.

If you do these things, you will pretty much be able to get almost any card. If you get one with a good rate, no annual fee, and a higher credit limit you can continue to build credit with it.

Basically when you miss a payment and get a late fee it can be reported to your credit bureau.. length of accounts and utilization are very important factors.. when other companies see that you can't even pay on one card and have late fees it puts you at a risk to them.. i suggest applying for a capital one platinum visa.. they have low standards for acceptance and they are not insane rates.. good card to start building credit.. also if you have a checking account look into getting a secured credit card at your bank.. then eventually getting it turned to non secured after paying it on time.. credit is a game of patience and responsibility and nothing comes overnight.. i wish you luck but make SURE you pay on time.. it's absolutely important..

contact the credit card company to see if you can work out a deal with them on repayment. maybe they will reduce your interest rate if you tell them you are thinking of going to another card company. they want your money!! most of the time they WILL work with you.

Wow, with a $800 credit limit, that isn't too good at all, so I can understand why other card providers would hesitate in extending you any more credit.

...say what?

try american express...but to keep your credit in tact, cut up the card and wait until you get it down, or atleast until you get the balance down to around $200. It sounds like you're only paying the minimum each month if fees keep pushing you over the limit. getting another card and transfering balances is only going to lower your rate. I doubt your score is in the 600s if you can't get another credit card and you only have one at the moment. I know it'll be hard, but hide it, cut it up, and atleast try to pay more than the minimum to avoid the extra interest.

To be honest, they only slap you with fees when you're late or over. Pay this credit card off, pay on time, and and a reasonable amount. Of course, at least the minimum amount. The best way to do this is to set it up online to deduct a set amount out of your account monthly. If you do this, you will not be able to mess it up. Just make sure you have that money in the bank. So set it up to deduct after your pay days.
If you have a hard time managing this card, you will have a hard time managing a second card as well. My guess is that it will only make things worse. Everytime you apply for a credit card, it brings your credit score down. So I wouldn't even go there. Just make steady payments and get rid of this debt. (I have SO been there!) Your credit is very important.
Good luck!

In order to get another credit card, that credit card company looks at your credit ratings, not just on how many points you have for yourself, they look at other issues like: utility bills, credit cards, and other things that you have credit on. With your first credit card, never pay the amount due, you will have to add additional monies on it. Like an extra twenty or so, this will help your extra fees that they slap you for. Good luck.

Well first of all.. what are these fee or fines you are getting hit with? That should only happen if you are going over the limit or missing payment. So if thats the case, avoid doing that. Then just keep chipping away it.

Someone out there will probably approve you either way. I got credit cards even when my score was back in the high 500s.

I have some tips that might be able to help you out. But first let me ask a couple of questions?

Have you been late at all with the payments on the account? If so, then that's probably part of the problem of why you're constantly getting dinged for fees.

Another thing, are you just paying the minimum payment? What credit card companies don't tell you is that they love it when people only pay the minimum payment, because that's exactly what it is: the minimum. When you add finance charges to a card that's at its max, the minimum payment barely covers the interest if at all.

What other bills are you paying? Is it pushing you into a corner where you're relying on your credit card?

Here's some tips:

1. Pay on time. I can't stress this enough. Matter of fact, pay early. Aside from the interest, late fees are one the biggest moneymakers for credit card.

2. Pay more than the minimum. LIke I mentioned earlier, interest, late fees, NSF fees, and another CC company favorite, overlimit fees. The closer your card's to the limit and just paying the minimum won't do. That may or may not even cover the interest. An idea that worked for me was to make 1½ times the minimum payment, then budget an additional $10-15 a week to where I paid up to $60 a month. Which brings be to...

3. Reevaluating your budget. You may have to do some slight alterations in your budget in order to accomodate paying the balance down considerably. An easy way to this is to separate needs vs. wants. Needs come first, just look in the dictionary. And to keep disciplined about sticking to it, get one of your statements with that high balance marked with a flourescent marker as a reminder of why you're doing it. It's a sacrifice, I know, but the ends in the case will justify the means. Try it for a few months and you'll see a definite difference.

While it would look like a doable idea to get another credit card, wait it out. Straighten this one out first, because even if you were approved for one, chances are it would put you in a position to "Rob Peter to pay Paul" and you're stuck with a lousy card that won't help your situation

If you can't pay down a measly $800 balance, you don't need another card. Those fees and fines you mentioned are probably late payment and/or over the limit charges.

Stick with the card you have, stop using it, and pay it down for real this time. Pay $100 or more every month, and you'll have it paid in no time as long as you don't use it.

If you can achieve this, you're credit score will go up, and then you'll be able to reward yourself with a REAL credit card. Mid 600s is not an OK credit score, but it's getting close. Pay this card down, have no late pays, and in 6-8 months I'll bet your credit score is much closer to 700.

Good luck.
