Recently my bank account has been in a bad state because I brought a new car. In this time I have been charged overdraw charges and some direct debits have failed so I have been charged direct debit failure charges by my bank Barclays bank plc. Is there anyway I can claim that money back? If yes what’s the procedure? |

Read the terms and conditions. If you have a good relationship with your bank and never had this problem before, the bank may waive ONE overdraft fee for you as a courtesy.
There is no way to get your money back because you don't have enough funds to cover. If you have a credit card that links with your checking account as overdraft protection, they can transfer the money from your credit card to your checking account but you have to pay an ATM interest rate and a fee of minimum of $10 for transfer the money from your credit card to your checking account. If you have a savings account then you only pay the transaction fee.
Call them and find out but I can guarantee that if they are nice enough, they only waive One overdraft fee usually $32 |

I'm not sure why buying a new car caused all this - unless you bought a car you can't afford - but it is highly unlikely you will get your money back. When you open an account you must sign documentation saying that you understand all the charges a bank can put against your account and all of their fees. Your signature says you understand and agree to these fees. This is how most banks make a majority of their money.
The only one who can "reverse" the charges or reimburse your funds would be the bank manager at your home bank. (The bank where you opened your acct.) You would have to go into the bank and talk with the manager directly. I have had them do it for me, but that was due to an emergency situation and I don't think your situation qualifies as an emergency. I do not mean to sound harsh, but if all this is caused because you bought a new car I doubt the bank will feel sorry enough for you to do it. They will most likely wonder why you bought a car you couldn't afford and that put you in this bad position in the first place.
Why should they pay for your mistake? That doesn't make much sense. If you made a bad choice you need to own up to and find a way to fix it without asking for anyone to bail you out ... this is the best way to learn from your own mistakes.

If you have a few things in your favor, such as a huge banking balance in your accounts, you're never done this before, you have excellent credit with them, etc, you might call Customer Service with the bank and plead your case. They can usually help you, if you are worth going out on a limb for. In other words, if you are a desirable customer and they would want to keep your business, they are more likely to be empathic and cut you a break and reverse the charges. Good luck and watch your finances better! |

You can still claim your charges back . But it will take a year to get them and only if the court case decides the charges are illegal. If you constantly run into problems your going to have to sort something out with the bank pretty quick or it will only get worse. |

Work in the financial sector and yes hate charges. This is not the answer you are looking for I know but feel someone other than banks should point this one out
If you jump on the media fueled band wagon then all you will do is make the banks fight back more. Yes banks can suck though also have a lot more money and influence than most think (regulated or not) and this will not change their profits.
They are taking these profits back in other ways and people who do stick to simple terms and conditions get shafted. People who have genuine financial difficulties and fail t&c's not cos they are too stupid to add, subtract and understand dates, get abused more than ever.
Buy a calculator, a calender and a pen. I have already saved you money on your charges. Either this or go back to putting money under your mattress unless you fancy paying for every service you currently take for granted. |

Sometimes a nice customer service person will get approval to reverse those type of charges if these overdraws are something new with you and not habitual. Call, or better yet walk in, to talk to a customer service rep and turn on the charm. Also, people here need to stop assuming that you can't afford your car or are a loser because some things bounced after you bought a car. True, overdrafts aren't cool and should be avoided. But it's not uncommon to have a short term cash flow problem after a major purchase requiring a large down payment (car, house, etc.), especially if you're single and have only your own income to depend on. You don't say here that you've been overdrawn for months and months, so they need to stop preaching. |

Usually, if this does not happen often, you can go to the bank, talk to a claims rep and get them to reduce the charges. Just tell them your situation. Often, they will try to get you to open an overdraft account so that this doesn't happen again. |
