Parents using a credit card issued under my own name?
Apparently, I get credit card offers coming to my house address even though i go to college outside of my state. My parents have basically forged my signature and created several credit cards under my name. I am 20 years old and apparently i cant even get my own credit card now because i am so in debt for things that i didn't even buy. Is there a way to check how many cards i have under my name? I don't really know much about banks and cards because i have never had one so any advice on what to do would be helpful.

Sorry mate, but with parents like yours, you've got to leave home or, totally disown them, by the way, how did they treat you when you were a kid?

That is tragic, my friend. Really - credit in the US will make or break you - for jobs, insurance, even health care sometimes. You need to get a free report - then confront your parents and tell them to cut up cards and pay - and if you get really angry (I would) you can sue for fraud. Go to a financial advisor if you can - I mean, you may not even be able to get a loan for your own education!!!! That is horrible!

Make it your mission to settle your financial portfolio. I wish I would have done that 10 years ago when I was 20. I didn't have anything like that happen to me, but I made mistakes I am still paying for. Don't be the victim - clean up your life now!!

You need to take action as soon as possible. Unfortunately you will likely have to press charges against your parents.

You first need to get your credit report. Go to annualcreditreport.com and get a copy of your credit report. It will include all of the information from the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Use ONLY this website because it is under federal mandate to provide you with a free credit report every year... if you do not believe me visit ftc.gov and retrieve the information yourself. Other companies will get you locked into credit review programs you will be charged for... do not use them.

This report will have all of the information about your credit, including what lines of credit have been taken out in your name and where/when/ etc. You will need to contact Visa, Mastercard, and any other credit companies used to fraudulently use your name to make purchases. They will most likely tell you to contact the police and to file a report before they can proceed with the investigation. However, do not take my word for it, just get the report and call the companies and see how to proceed. Make sure you tell them to freeze all of your accounts.

Credit card fraud is a felony and there is a chance that your parents will do time, or at least be put on probation, depending on how severe the damage is. However, they can ruin your credit EASILY and this can prevent you from EVER purchasing a house/car/business or receive financing for everything. Companies are also starting to use credit reports as a means (during the hiring process) to see how responsible their employees are, so be aware of this.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope it works out for you. I can imagine this is an extremely difficult situation and I sympathize.

Get your credit report from annualcreditreport.com (which is the official free site--avoid that other one). You may not be able to get it online because you may not know the answers to the questions they ask.

Needless to say, this is a situation that should never happen. Why don't you see if there is an office on your college campus that may be able to help you deal with it.

You will need to attest to the fact that these are not your cards and you have never applied for them or used them.

I'm so very sorry you are in this position. I just can't fathom parents being so cruel.

You should order a credit report immediately and then, if you can, find legal counsel.

Dispute all the charges alleging identity theft. The investigation is on them; all you have to show is your legal address and your signature (for comparison).

My mother did the same thing to me except she started when I was 13. I ended up putting her in jail for it. What they did is illegal and needs to have charges filed for the credit bureaus to do anything at all about this. I know, I have been there.

First, get your credit reports.
Second, call all the creditors listed. Usually, you get a phone number, but, if not, just go to Yellowbook.com & look them up. You will get a city & state, at the very least. When you call them, explain what happened & get the cards cancelled & full account history sent to your direct address.
Third, when all this comes in, go to the police & fill out a report.
Fourth, make several copies of the police report & send a copy (certified mail - return receipt requested!) to each of the creditors (along with the credit bureaus) along with a letter stating everything that happened and what you have done & requesting they remove this item from your credit report(s).
Fifth, request another copy of your credit reports 90 days after you send the letters & go through the mailing process again with all companies not yet removed. I know, it is expensive, a lot of work & a lot of bu||shi+ but it can be worth it to protect your credit.

I was there & now I have credit that many people would envy.

In addition to what everyone else has said, ask the credit bureau to a) change the address, b) phone number and c) freeze the account from further credit granting.

You need to order a copy of your credit report. Any credit that has been opened in your name will be listed, showing the date and other information. Since not all credit reporting bureaus report the same things, you may need to order all three, one each from Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. This way you will see exactly what's going on.

If you see anything that is not yours, contact the creditors and report the account as fraud and not belonging to you. If necessary, file a complaint with the police. This is fraud.

Holy Crap - that's evil! You need to get a credit report from one of the 3 major credit report companies. Try Experian or Transunion. Then you need to contact each credit card company appearing on your credit report and tell them that someone else opened those accounts in your name. What your parents did is illegal. Sorry for you because it can take a long time to clear your name.
Good Luck.

The government allows 1 free credit report a year with 3 of the credit agencies. Th is is the link:

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

What your parents did was despicable and has basically ruined your credit for a minimum of 7 years. It's basically identity theft from your own freaking parents. What the hell is wrong with them?

I would get yourself to a lawyer or law school and find the free clinic. You can get this fixed, and you probably will have to end up getting a new social security number.
