I have actually seen this before, with an account I had. I forgot my password to get into the job, and had a hell of a job getting them to reset it, and as with you had to send ID. Sometimes they do this when they open an account to verify your identity.
However, as others have said, there are also fraud emails asking for this data!
You need to make sure that the requests come from a verified payment source. Do a check on fax numbers, and make sure that they are actually owned by paypal (they should be listed on the paypal site).
So to sum up, yes this is something that paypal do, but make sure you are actually dealing with paypal, and not a scammer! |

Its a scam.
Paypal or any Bank for that matter will never ask you for personal details on line or by phone.

If it's up when you login www.paypal.com, it is not a scam. I have had this happen to me being that I sell expensive items and things at low prices that normal people can't get their hands on. I had to supply all of my suppliers, DL, social, telephone # and accounts with credit card confirmed address. Paypal has gotten stricter on things they let slide in the pass. They held all the money in the account until I supplied them with all this information.
If it's a email it's more than likely fraud. |

I HAVE HAD THIS AND IT IS A SCAM, FRAUDSTERS SET UP WEBPAGES THAT LOOK LIKE PAYPAL PAGES, I HAD A EMAIL TO LOG IN AND GIVE THEM MY DEATILS AND WHEN I CLICKED ON THE LINK IN THE EMAIL IT TOOK ME TO THE FAKE PAGE.
IT PROBABLY IS A SCAM SO DONT SEND THEM ANYTHING.
ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION....WHY WOULD PAYPAL WANT YOU DRIVERS LICENCE AND PASSPORT????

I recently asked them to change my surname to my married name and the sent me an email back asking for the exact details that you stated....................I was scared to give them this information and have just kept things as they are.
I can't be 100% sure that it was a genuine Paypal email but it was a reply to my enquiry and not a random email. |

Paypal will never ask for your passport, social security card...any private identification through an e-mail.
Never trust an e-mail for company asking for this type of information.
Scammers can make the site look legit but it's not.
Go directly to Paypal's website. DO NOT use the link provided in the e-mail.

I know for a fact that PayPal does ask people to fax in or mail in such information. Most common reason is that this is one of the ways PayPal fights fraud, for example they may notice some activity that they consider strange and suspect that somebody stole your account.
I suggest you try to call their customer support and confirm this. But if you indeed see this request on your account overview page after you log in at paypal.com - that means it's NOT a scam |

When setting up paypal i personally didn't have to disclose any of these items and I would contact paypal directly before sending any of these documents. You shouldn't have to send these documents. |

I really believe you have one of those look alike scam sites. I have used Pay Pal for years both for business and personal use and they don't ask for that kind of information. Trust me, it's a scam. Paypal does not require that much information. You need to make sure you are on a legitimate paypal site and that it has the secure lock icon in the lower right hand corner of the website. |

They never did that to me, it sounds very much like a scam. Go onto paypal and somewhere they give you a telephone number to contact them on. I am sure they will tell you to forward the email to them for investigation. |

sounds like anti money laundering checks to me. most financial instritutions who deal with transcations require a person to be identified before accepting payments. Although i use pay pal and have never been asked maybe they are changing the rules for new or high risk clients

Depends weather it was you who instigated being asked i.e.I got married recently and have changed my surname. When I logged onto the official Paypal site to find out how to change my name on my accout I was informed I would need to supply copies of my driving licience/passport and marriage certificate. So perhaps if you wanted to change something about your account, you may well have to supply these. On the other hand, as most peeps have said, if the request was via an email then of course its spam. |
