spinacheater | Photo ID required when using a debit card? |
I just got a debit card, but unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, I have no photo ID. My question is this: do you need one to use the debit card? I know the pin number and everything. I'm just curious as to whether I can actually use it. |

I have been asked - and I refused to show it. The reason I got one in the first place was so I did not have to show my personal information to anyone. The last time I was asked, the manager got involved and informed me it was store policy to require identification. I asked him did he not know that PIN stands for personal IDENTIFICATION number. He acted kinda embarassed and gave in. |

In actuality, using a photo ID increases your chances of being a victim of identity theft. To the person who said it helps protect you from identity theft -- umm, how? It's just one more thing a person trying to steal your identity might be able to steal or make a copy of. There is no conceivable security advantage to having it.
Showing your photo ID when you use a credit or debit card actually increases your risk of falling victim to identity theft. First, you showing your photo ID won't make someone who steals of fakes your card have to show it. So you showing it won't stop a hypothetical thief.
Second, when you use your card, the place you are using it can copy all the info off the card. Having your DL number, address, and date of birth only makes it easier for them to sell that information to an ID thief or use it themselves.
So no, even if you have ID, it reduces your security to show it when you use a debit or credit card. There is no way for you to require a possible thief to show ID to use your credit card. Even writing 'ask for ID' is pointless, because the thief will typically copy the information off of your card's magnetic strip, not use the actual card. |

Yes some people ask for them. You should get one anyway. And sometimes people lose their card or it's stolen, then anyone can use your debit card by just swiping the card without the pin, so then you would be out of that money, with no hopes of getting it back. Then what? Also, lots of people put there pin number and identification on or near there credit/debit cards, so for your protection, just get a ID card.
Better safe than sorry. |

no u shouldn/t be asked for your id when using your debit card unless you use it as credit, when paying just say debit and then you can put in your pin. my husband uses my debit card cause he cant get one and has never been asked for an id. |

No. Just put it in machine or give to cashier and type in your PIN like a credit card. It's that easy! |

Most times no, rare times yes. And to who said they're only $5, it's not so in every state. In Nebraska they cost the same price as a license. $23.75 for both. Every state has different prices for them. You should be fine without it, but you might want to think about getting ID just in case and it's good to have anyway. |

I only get asked for photo ID once in awhile, not very often for my debit card... so I think you should be fine to use it. |

About 20% of the time when I use my debit card, I am asked to produce a photo ID. This is usually in department type stores, but occasionally in a restaurant too. |

no you dont. I have a debit card and all I do is hand it over and sign and it's done. |

In most cases you will not need an ID.
But some places do ask for your photo ID when using a debit card for security reasons.
Please get a photo id.They're only $5.Go to your state building and purchase one. They're not hard to get.$5 is reasonable.Plus its also safe to have a photo id.In case something happens to you, if you get pulled over, etc. etc.
Plus with identity theft going on, you should really get a photo id.This is also for your protection. |
