here is the problem. He is unemployed due to a disability his credit is really bad owing student loans and IRS. I have a good job and my credit is fairly decent. The moment you marry him, his debt becomes your debt. You're as liable for it a he is. If you try to buy a house or a car, his bad credit will drag down your effective score which will mean you pay more for any financing. Same goes for credit cards. |

I am married. When we were planning I was on top of the world. I didn't think to ask a question like this one. I wish now I had. The answer is yes, you will be responsible. The IRS will take what he owes from your tax return to pay what he owes them. Now there is a form you can fill out to stop them from taking all of your money, but it will not stop them from taking your money. Some words of advice. Sit down with him and discuss your future plans openly and honestly. Know what you both want and expect from this marriage. His bad credit doesn't have to be the end of the world, or the end of your relationship. Things like this can be worked out with planning, budgeting, and good communication. Helping a good man while he is down is one of the many talents we as woman carry in our DNA. If he has a history of failed jobs, or has displayed a lack of motivation in pursuing another job you should do whatever best suits you and your future. Remember it is your life, your decision, your final word. make the best one for you! |

I check people credit @ my work, usually wife's is similar to hubby's, but sometimes, mr.'s credit would be bad & mrs.' would be good. Don't share credit cards with him. If you finance, put your name on the application, and help him repair his credit. |

I'm with Sheila P on this one - think twice about getting married - just live together - why do you think I'm not married?? No way am I going to put myself in that situation again - never ever ever ever - its best to just be single and take care of your own finances - let him take care of his - It took me ten years to recover from my ex husband's financial irresponsiblity - run up credit cards, charge offs, foreclosure. Now I've been on my own 12 years - never have been late on my house payment. At the very least - if you go forward, please get some kind of prenuputual papers or keep your credit seperate. Your credit will not be effected by marriage. You will still have yours and he will still have his. As long as the debts were in cured before you got married, there is no way that they can come after you for it.
As far as the I.R.S. is concerned, file married filing separately and you should have no problems.
Do not apply for joint credit. This will hurt you. |

What attracted you to a man who owes money to the IRS???? I can understand bad credit (heck most people have bad credit). Having student loans is almost a right of passage into adulthood. Now owing money to the IRS is something only the extremely dumb or the extremely corrupt do. |
