Please help. credit card debt: should i borrow or pay it off little by little.?
I often pay off my credit card bill every month. I've been struggling for the past 2 months b/c my income is low rt now since i don't work that many hours (student). I take care of my mom and younger sister. my credit card statement came out about $4000. i have student loans, personal loans, and mortgage. should i work more hours and pay it off or should i ask my family friends for money and pay them off. i have asked so many people for money and i have to pay them off as soon as i finish my education. they are all very rich and some are really willing to help. i hate to ask people for money unless i really have to. what should i do in this situation?
Additional Details
i work and after i pay all the bills, i have no money for food and gas. these were used for food and gas only. except that my mom got lazy last couple of months and stopped cooking. so i bought food for ourselves from outside. also, i changed 4 tires, payed for property tax. so that's why the bill is so high

Wow, it sounds like you have a lot going on with your life. Mortgage, work, taking care of relatives, and getting an education, too? You rock, dude!

Somehow, you've managed to keep your credit card debt at $4,000. For someone in your position, that's pretty darn good. Comparison shop online to make sure your card is charging the appropriate interest for your situation. Comparision shop -- you may find you can lower your monthly payments.

Overall, there is good debt, and there is bad debt. Good debt is the kind that is an investment -- a house, or an education. Money spent on those items gets paid back, and then some. You've got mostly good debt, I'd say.

So don't be too hard on yourself. Keep the debt as low as possible. Get some low-cost credit counseling from a reputable credit counselor (Go to "Selecting a credit counselor" at http://www.creditcards.com/Select-a-Credit-Counseling-Agency.php for specific advice).

I can't advise you on borrowing from relatives. I'll tell you that most financial experts say it's not a good idea from the lender's perspective, because the loans tend to be too informal, and there's often emotional baggage that gets attached or created.

From what you've stated, you're not in bad shape, compared to the others I've seen. Your hard work now will pay off in the future.

Good luck.

Pay off the credit card as soon as possible by any (legal) means you can. At 15% interest at higher (most credit cards are) the interest rate alone is scary. It would be better to owe a rich family member $4000 then it would be to pay a credit card company over the next few years.

The first thing you should do is make sure you're not still spending and using those credit cards. That's the most important thing. Should you borrow? Maybe...what's your cc interest rate? If it's like 20%, it would probably help you pay it off a lot faster. You might even be able to get a bank loan with a more reasonable rate to pay off the cc debts. It's always awkward to borrow from your friends and family and it can hurt relationships. $4000 is a lot but it could be a lot worse too. I would work as much as possible and consistently pay as much every month as you can possibly afford to pay. Keep doing this and not spending and it will work out. Borrow as a last resort though, just for the sake of your relationships

Credit card interest rates are high...18-24%. If you can get a loan at a lower rate and pay off the cards, you'll be farther ahead. Then destroy the cards until the loan is paid off....

With that many loans, you should get another job and pay off the card...then try not to use it quite as often.

It is never good to take out a loan against already borrowed funds unless it makes sense. It may make sense if the APR is MUCH lower and, more importantly, you can take that card and cut it up. If this method gives you the "shakes", brings on "sweating", or you just cannot cut it up, get a freezer bag and place the card inside, fill with water and put in freezer. This will make it less likely to be used. The best scenario is get the money from family, if not all needed, a large portion to reduce monthly payments. Get that card under control!!!!!!!!!!

I teach at times to juniors and seniors at Georgia State University and Devry Institute north of Atlanta and the topic is "How a credit report works and how it effects your life". Any college student with little or no credit can get a credit card. Why? Credit card companies know you are a student and if you cannot make payments your family will, it is low risk to them and if you can make payments on time can be a plus to your "early in life" credit report.

Many Fortune 500 companies before hiring will pull your credit. This is one avenue they use to determine if you are a "risk" to the company. In other words, if you have an abundance of delinquent payments, collections, poor credit score your risk to them is the possibiltiy of embezzlement and your ability to handle that companies clients. In other words, if an individual can't handle their own affairs how can they possibly be a professional to a client.

You graduate, go to work with a good salary and love your job. You are dedicated, motivated, enjoying life and decide to purchase a home. The number one "KILLER" to college graduates buying their first home is the "deferred" Student Loan. Why? Most Student Loans defer payments as long as 5 yrs (+/-). The years go by and you do not make any payments but the interest accrues. Now, all of a sudden, your original "High Credit Limit" Student Loan has a "Balance" far exceeding this limit. This is devastating to your "Credit Score" and, my guess, eliminates approximately 80% of these type credit situations from acquiring a home that year. I have seen this situation effect scoring as much as 110 points depending on the percentage of "balance" above "high credit limit".

College is time to begin a professional career and make a good income. It is the first step in taking care of yourself. Use this time to complete college and only purchase what you really need. The fun begins when you do graduate and land that first job and get that all important paycheck. Your GPA is of utmost importance, especially as a junior and senior. This will determine if a company will hire you and determines starting salary as well. If you are below 3.0 work very hard to get it up. The Navy and Air Force will not even consider as a pilot, etc. unless you have 3.2 or better in most cases just to give you an example of the importance GPA has.

First of all don't get into more debt!!! That is sooooo dumb!! You would be stuck in a revolving door. Just give the credit card company what every you have it might ruin your credit, but you are young and can fix it. Do not let the credit card company bully you. What you should do is ask people for money and try to work a few extra hours to get it paid off.
