lookinout | Question about credit...? |
I have really bad credit with a score of 539. I made a lot of mistakes when I was 18, I am now 25 and don't need you to lecture me. My question is... I just got approved for a Continental Mastercard, which has some kind of high one time fees, but if I accept this and keep it current, will this help my credit score? |

They have plenty of fees, and some are not "one time" fees!
I did some research and found that many people have been unhappy with this card. It is a MasterCard for people with bad credit. It charges high fees - $99 setup fee, $89 program participation fee, $49 annual fee and $10 PER MONTH account maintenance fee. Before you even get the card, you'll owe them $247 in fees! If you're like the other people I read about, you'll get a $300 credit limit, meaning when you first get your card you'll have $53 in available credit. That's ridiculous.
What's more, they charge you $4 to pay your bill online, and people who have paid by mail claim the company didn't apply their payment until after the due date, and then added a $30 late fee.
They say they'll increase your credit limit semi-annually... but there's a $25 "credit limit increase fee."
So what will this card cost you? The first year will cost $457 in fees (set up, program participation, annual fee, and monthly account maintenance fee, and twice a year $25 credit limit increase fee). Every year after that will cost $219 (annual fee, monthly account maintenance fee, twice a year credit limit increase fee). And that's before you pay any interest! And unless you make very large payments immediately, you'll have almost no available credit anyway!
This is the worst credit card I have ever heard of, and I recommend you stay far away from it. If you're trying to rebuild your credit, you would be better off getting a secured card from your bank. |

as long as you can aforred it you should be ok the best thing to do would be to buy something on it every month that you can pay off or almost pay off every month when you get the bill u will excape finance charges and on your credit report you get a little 1 for every month that you paid the bill on time this of chorse will help your credit eventually but if u dont use it and dont pay cause u arnt getting a bill this does not help ur credit because u arnt getting that little 1 every month dont listen to people who say having a credit card and never using it helps ur credit that dosnt make sence if u dont use it and dont ever pay then how do they know u know how to use credit and pay ur bills |

Yes. I was in the same situation and the only way to rebuild your credit is to open 2 or 3 credit cards with very low limits and pay them off every month.
Also, look closely at your your credit report. If your delinquencies occurred over 7 years ago, you can have the reporting agencies remove them from your report (thus increasing your score). |

Perhaps a credit repair company NOT debt consolidation company would be your best bet?
The Do's of Finding Good Credit Repair Services:
DO shop around – have several options.
DO ask questions about fees – legitimate credit repair services shouldn't take all your money up front.
DO find out what kind of promises they make.
DO try and get as much in writing as possible to protect yourself.
The Don'ts of Finding Good Credit Repair Services:
DON'T believe claims that the service can erase any bad credit, can raise your credit score in a short period of time, etc.
DON'T pay a large sum up front – many scams will take your money and run.
DON'T sign up for any credit repair services who are unwilling to give you something in writing.
DON'T use a service without thoroughly researching its credentials. |

Get a "Secured" Visa or MC. This is one where you deposit money into the account and then spend it. You might join a credit union and meet their credit manager and ask how to best improve your credit through them. Just take your time and be careful.
These high fee cards are a rip-off.
Also, get a hold of your credit report and look it over carefully. Make sure there is not stuff on there that shouldn't be like out dated late payments. Ask the credit union folks to help you clean up your credit report.
Take your time and be careful. As you well know bad credit is hard to un do. |

absolutely. but see if you can get a card where you put the money up front, and maybe avoid those fees. |

Since you don't say what the high one time fees are I would recommend checking with banks for a secured credit card. This type of card is guaranteed by money you have on deposit. Since a card should only be used for what you can afford and for convenience that may be the way to go. |

These high fee/high interest cards will help you build some credit if you keep the payments on time. And most of them do increase the credit limit and (I think) some lower the interest after you establish a good payment history with them. You don't want too many, however, because you want to keep your revolving credit dollar amounts from getting too high, also. I've been going through the same thing myself. Good luck. |

yea but you need to keep it paid off...and do not be late on your payments...it might take a little while but it will eventually build |

Yes it will, if you keep the balance low, pay on time, and pay it off regularly. After a year, if they see you doing all of this you will start to get offers for better cards. I also heard that if you keep cards open after you stop using them, that makes you score rise. Just be good and dont use them! |

No and NO!! Don't do it!! Don't get a new card!!! I just cut up my zero balance cards and i'm not going down that road to debt! My Hubby and I are trying to become debt free! If you are debt free and stick money insavings and in good investments long term, and have money set aside for emergencies you don't need credit or care about your score either. Just get the sissors and cut up the application or the card or what ever you have and throw it away. You will be HAPPY you did. Good Luck! |
