Cassie | Question about credit card, to gain credit? Paying off balance in full every month? |
I need to establish credit, so I have applied for a BancFirst credit card, and my plan was to make like a $50.00 purchase or so each month and pay it off at the end of each month, I am now being told that it will not work, that for example, If I make a $50.00 purchase, I have to pay for instance like $30.00 to build credit, if I pay it off in full each month it wont build credit. Is this true? I don't want to get my self into credit card debt, but I need to build credit I have none. |

You can build credit by having a credit card, keeping a credit card, paying off your credit on time- it does not matter how much, just that you have a credit card and you dont go over the limit as well.
Keep the card for a while...you can also build credit by having several cards...low purchases (nothing major) and pay them off as you wish.
I have a couple...I make regular on time payments with them and I am building my credit.
Just be careful that you can make at least the minimum each month and I would definitely sign up for the automatic payment of the card that way you are sure to never default on the payment, incur fees, and lower your score. The more revolving credit lines you keep in order and paid the more you will build your credit. High balances paid off on time will help boost your score. Consider using your credit card as your form of payment and pay the card from your checking ea. Friday. You may gain percentages back for purchases- I know Discover does that- I earn cash back on certain purchases each month. |

That is not true.
I have used 3 credit cards for over 2-years for just about everything each month except lunch and always pay them off in full before the due date and my score has gone up will over 150-points and I earn lots of cash back rewards each year just for using someone elses money for free. |

My husband and I pay off our credit card balance every month, it does not matter how much we charged...50.00 or sometimes 2,000, our credit rating is excellent. I have never carried a balance. |

pay it off every month, it shows you know how to manage your money. I've been doing that for 20 years & have a high score. |

No, carrying a balance does not help your credit. You will end up paying a finance charge that way. If you pay it off every month, you will build your credit because your credit report shows how often you are late and so on.. check out bankrate.com or myfico.com. they are great resources! |

You were told wrong. You do not have to carry a balance to "build credit." It is your record of on-time payments that will build credit, NOT carrying a balance. |

You don't have to carry a balance to build credit. That's a myth.
My aunt and Uncle have a spotless and awesome credit rating and that is one way they did it.
They purchase all their food and gas each month on their credit card and pay it off every month. It helps them keep track of what they are spending and where they are spending it, and it helped them establish a great credit rating.
"Credit bureaus don't care if you pay off your balance each month. They're interested in how much of your available credit you use. If it's excessive, your credit score will drop." |

That is not true. Paying off your credit card on time every month is a great way to pay off your credit. A benefit to paying it off every month is also that you will avoid paying interest. |

There is some truth to this. Where as paying off your debt in full each month is responsible and honorable. The whole idea behind revolving debt such as a credit card is that the debt should actually revolve.
If you don't ever leave a balance the debt to income ratio won't change, leaving little to calculate your credit score with.
For the first several months leave a small balance just as you mentioned above, after about 3 months or so you can re-start paying again in full. The only down side to this is you will incur interest on not just the balance but the entire charge.
Personally I wouldn't worry about it too much, just pay and in the future apply for different types of credit. |
