Realistic approach to dealing with credit card debt?
My curcimstances:

I'm 21, a new mom, full time student, and full time pharmacy tech. I don't make a lot...considering my fixed expenses such as rent, utilities, and child care. But I have almost $6,000 in credit card debt as well as miscellaneous debts; which I accumulated throughout my pregnancy becuase I was unable to work and keep up with payments.

I don't have lot to give, and even if I do pay a little it's only paying some of the late charges that I have racked up. I have had settlement offers from the companies, however they want me to pay the full amount which I am not capable of doing at this point.

What do I do? Is there something I am missing....or is credit card debt a never ending battle for those who can't pay off the settlement offers?

Stay away from debt counseling companies. You can usually get everything they get yourself. Try paying minimums on everything except your smallest bill and attack it with a passion. When it's paid off, go to the next smallest. Are you in a church? It's not the reason to go but church families can help with childcare and other needs. They can also be a hugh emotional support while you dig your way out of this hole. For more information, go to daveramsey.com.

Sounds like your stuck on the credit treadmill. The only real options to approach this other than to continue with minimums is either credit counseling or debt settlement. Both have their respective pros and cons, with credit counseling you will pay back your entire balance, plus a lowered amount of interest, with settlement you can look to save between 40-50% on your current balances, with the correct negotiation skills or company..

As far as the settlement offers they offer directly to the consumers usually they will offer someone around 80% maybe a little less, and they want all the money at once or over the course of a few large payments.

If you are looking to just pay it off on your own then you are going to have to seriously look at trying to pay double the minimum or your just going to be treading water and getting no where.

I wish you the best of luck

If a person has accumulated a large amount of credit card debt due to multiple credit cards, the need for a proper counseling for credit card debt consolidation can't be understated. Credit card debt consolidation counseling helps a person get vital insights into the facts that can help him get control over the credit card debt.

Credit card debt consolidation counselors are experts with a good knowledge of debt management, budgeting and behavioral patterns of credit card holders. These services are vital for those struggling to manage their credit card debts. Also called credit counseling or debt counseling the credit card debt consolidation counseling brings immediate relief to a credit card holder.

A person seeking credit counseling can get it from two types of organizations. The professional or commercial organizations, and the non-profit organizations. As depicted by its name or categorization, the commercial organizations charge money for their credit counseling sessions and consolidation help on the other hand the non-profit organizations offer free of charge services. Just because the non-profit organizations are free, it doesn't undermine their quality of service. The persons associated with such organizations are thorough experts and have lived the trauma of being under credit card debt themselves and hence bring their vital experience to the credit card holder.

When a person approaches a credit counseling agency, the first thing it will do is to take stock of the situation and get various facts about the credit card debt. The credit counseling agency collects data about the income, expenditure and spending habits. It will guide the credit card holder about budgeting benefits and try to inculcate good financial habits. Yafooey!
From what I learned about credit card debt is, if you have a debt of at least $5,000 and are only paying the allowed minimum, plus the interest, the debt will take many years to pay off. Credit card companies make their money from interest and finance charges accrued.

It's unfortunate that you put yourself in a hole so early. Even by accepting a settlement offer, your credit rating will be negatively affected. Once your credit rating is more negative than positive, it will be difficult to get credit in some stores.

If your personal debt becomes too much to handle, see a bankruptcy attorney and let him help. It might cost up to $700.00 to do this, but in your case, it is cheaper than the other way.

consolidate and work one of those companies that handles your debt and gets it to a reasonable amount per month...it might ruin your credi score but at least its the first step to rebuilding it...also finding a rich boyfriend never hurts :)...good luck with everything

Credit card debt consolidation adds up all your unpaid balances and converts them into a single payment. This payment is far lesser than each of the individual payments.

When you finalize a plan with a debt consolidation company, the company repays your dues to your creditors. Then you make a single payment to the consolidation company every month. Your average new interest rate is much below the old interest rate.
