Self check out at Wal Mart giving you too much change?
The other day, I used the self check out service at WalMart.

My total was 28 dollars and some change and I insert a 20 dollar bill, and two 5 dollars bills....equaling $30 that I inserted into the machine.

It gave me 36 dollars and some change back.

Making it give me 35 dollars extra.

Would you have kept the extra money and told no one?

I took it back the day after because I felt so guilty.

I would have told a clerk or manager. It's stealing if you keep it. You did the right thing.

The quality of a person is defined by what they do when no one is looking. As a cashier, I would always give the money back because I would hope someone would do the same for me. Besides the fact that it's not my money to begin with.

Craig T
A clear conscience is a wonderful thing, you could have easily gotten by but I applaud you for doing the right thing. That is called having character.

The measure of a person is not what they do when everyone is watching but what they do when no one is.

teenysfashion03
I would have given it back also.
Cause they could pin point you with the cameras in the self check outs and would have gotten to u sooner or later.

but good for u taken it back
noone needs bad karma

eve-
I would of told them then. But at least you told them.

Good for you. Similar thing happened to me at my bank - They handed me a 50 & a 20 instead of two 20s. I didn't even count, and they were closed by the time I noticed.

I contacted the manager and told them to take it out of my account (I wasn't going to drive back there) they said just to keep it.

I would not keep it.

I would give it back, my mom raised me to have good morals. I once walked out with a pair of sun glasses on my head that i forgot about, i went back in to pay for them though i got out with them. i can't do that.

Uma S
Of all the answers I read to this question, this stands out the most...

"The quality of a person is defined by what they do when no one is looking."

Obviously, you did the right thing.

ecmsings
i wouldn't keep it either i would feel guilty too

I would have stayed there and asked for clerk to come shut down the machine.

Simple fact is if you steal $10 you will have to pay back $30.

I am happy that you returned the money.

the machine has made an error in your favor, you are legally entitled to keep it or you could donate it anonymously to a charity if you felt guilty

Gathrin
Honestly I probably wouldn't notice it. And never pay attention. I'm inattentive at best.

You should have kept it. The person you gave it to at walmart probably kept it.

i would have kept it as no one would be responsible for the loss but the owner. Unlike if it were a cashier they may have took it from that person's pay

I'd keep it. It's not my fault that the machine has technical errors.

John
Keep it! They'd never miss it. It's their screw up! You're stealing from a massive corporation, not an individual.

No questions asked, I would have kept it. If it was some sort of newscast checking to see if people are honest, I would have said that I didn't realize it had over paid me in change.

I would have kept it but used it to buy more things from Walmart. I would feel guilty if I spent it somewhere else.

I'm sure the Walton billionaires appreciate your honesty. My guess is that if you are shopping at Walmart you need the money more than they do.

you-asked!
finders keepers! wal mart is not some poor person, they are a huge company, that falls under the they're fault category, i would totally keep it., io might even have bought something else in case it happened again lol

keep it and do something good for everyone else with it, wal mart is a corporate giant that preys on small business's and puts good working people out on the streets, take as much as you can!

geastietheghasta
I definitely would have kept it. The I would've bought something for 100 dollars and seen if I gave me 105 dollars back. I would probably get caught though...hmm..
