ArchAngel Raziel | Should I Pay the Cable Bill With my Credit Card? |
My mother let the cable bill get out of hand again, and now its like 130 something, and she wants me to pay it off with my credit card. She's on a fixed income and I still have basically 2 more months before I go back to college. She says if I pay it off, she'll start putting 50 dollars on the credit card bill?
Most of the charges on it are do to helping her with some of the bills, so should I pay it off? |

If at all possible pay the bill using cash. Once you start adding on the interest rate its almost better to get a book a turn the cable off. |

Never pay anything with a credit card that will make the payment so high that you can't pay it off completely every month. NEVER! |

If your mother is being irresponsible with her money then you should not continue to help her do that. What you can do is to pay the cable the last time and then give her an ultimatum that if she ever do this again on any of her bill then you will no longer take the crap from her. But if she is unable to pay the bill because her fixed income is not enough then you have to give her a little understanding. Look at her expenses in a month and budget around that fixed income she gets. If cable is already over-burdening her budget then opt for something that is cheaper or drop it altogether. Bottomline is you have to live within your means (both of you). |

I WOULD ONLY PAY THE CABLE BILL WITH THE CREDIT CARD IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THE BALANCE OFF ON THE CREDIT CARD WHEN THE BILL ARRIVES. |

We always want to help our parents. Remember however that it is your credit that could be damaged if the card is not paid off properly. What has been your Mom's history as far as paying back money? Will you be able to make the payments ok if she is unable to pay? I say, if you can pay the payment with out her help then go ahead and do it, if not I would be very cautious. |

It depends on whether you reside in the house where the cable is. If it is your mother's house and you don't live there (to be making use of the cable) then you need to be cruel to be kind. Saying "no" to her this time will drive home the message that she needs to be more careful. Perhaps you and she need to sit down together to work out a budget for her that is compatible with her income. Allowing her to live beyond her means is a receipt for trouble in the future. Your mother cannot depend on you forever as there will come a time when you are ready to get married with all the financial pressures that that entails |

Tough situation. If you can afford it, then yes. You may not get the $50.00 from your mother. If it is going to throw you into debt, then explain to her that you can not afford to pay it. It sounds like your mother is living above her income, which is easy to do on a fixed one. Can she possibly get a part time job? This would help financially, and also give her some socialization. |
