Should I cancel my credit card for this reason?
I have my credit card all paid off. But they keep charging me these stupid $1 and 50 cent fees! I hear you are not supposed to cancel a credit card because it will lower your credit rating but I am sick of paying these stupid fees! I have never been late on a payment or anything. I don't know why I am being charged this crap.

The reason canceling a credit card can lower your score is that it can disrupt your open credit ratio. 30% of your credit score is calculated by looking at how much credit you have available compared to how much you have used.

If you have a $2000 card completely paid off and a $4000 card with a $3000 balance, you have used 50% of your available credit. $3000 used of a total of $6000 credit. If you close the $2000 card, your used credit will be 75% or $3000 of $4000 total credit.
In general, you want to keep your used credit under 30% of your total available credit so you will have to look at your personal situation to determine if closing this card will help or hurt you.

Call your credit card company and ask about the fees. They sound like some sort of monthly maintenance fees. Ask them to stop charging the fees or ask if they have a different card with better terms.

Before canceling your credit card--you should call the credit card company and ask why you are being charged the $1.50. If the person you are referred to doesn't answer your questions you should asked to speak with someone of higher authority.
In the end--if they are charging you for no reason--you should most definately cancel your credit card and report them.

you need to do some checking read your contract. They may make you pay for the cancel. Well If you are keeping your card for credit purposes you may need to accept the fees to keep your credit good.

i don't think that you should cancel out your credit card because it will lower your credit rating..& the higher your credit rating the better..just call & talk to teh credit company customer service..

beauty s
I would close the card..

If you have only one credit card (CC), then I would seek a better credit card and preferably one with no annual fee, a lower APR, and a higher limit.

Call the CC company and ask about eliminating fees. Sometimes they will do it even AFTER the fee has been charged "as a courtesy".

Closing a CC might or might not hurt your score. Closing a CC lowers your overall available credit limit (CL), and if you're carrying balances on CCs then your CC util will rise. Higher util equals lower score.

If you have other credit cards, you have a "comfortable" amount of available credit on other cards, then yes I would close the card. If a credit card is costing you money, in fees, then it's time to consider getting better cards and closing this one.

Cancelling your card does not hurt your credit rating. Call the CC company, ask about the fees and cancel the card. They will transfer you to someone who handles cancellations and they will try try hard to keep you (so you continue to pay extra fees). They'll say the fees are there to protect you or some other BS. But, before they finish their pitch just keep saying "I want to cancel my card".

it depends on how long you've had this card also.because when applying for other credit, they may look for accounts that you've managed and had for sometime ; to determine how well you handle your money.like some of the others........i say call the company and find out and if you've been with them for some time they don't want to lose you.so, depending on how long you had this open credit account...i believe it can affect your credit in some ways.

Phil
Have you called customer service to ask why you are being charged these fees? It could be a simple clerical error that they can easily fix for you. If it's not, you might explain to the company that you are not satisfied with the current arrangement. If you are a good customer, they may offer you a different card with terms more to your liking. I had a credit card with a fairly high interest rate. I asked if I could have a lower one, and they gave it to me.

I also had a credit card that I hardly ever used and the company I got it from sent me a letter suggesting I either start using it more or get rid of it. Their contention was that having too much available credit could be bad for your credit because banks might hesitate to loan a lot of money to someone who could suddenly take on a lot more debt with their credit card. You might want to consult a loan officer at your bank to see what he/she has to say.

It shouldn't hurt your credit to cancel a credit card. If you go for months without paying your bill, that would screw with your credit score...

yes, you can cancel it and it will not hurt your rating, often people have multiple cards (open) with no balance on them. That can be worse for a rating since each carries a line of credit that can be used.

I would not pay any fees, call the cfompany and threten to cancel or request to be offered a different card. Often, card companies have hundreds of card types and plans they can customize to meet YOUR needs.
