Should I close a bad credit card?
I cut up two cards months ago, but after being unemployed I haven't been able to make the min. payments. I've been in contact with them, but wonder if closing the accounts will atleast stop the late payment fees and eventually the over limit fees. what should I do?

Talk to a supervisor at the card...they may waiver things and work with you more. Go ahead and stop it. It looks better if you close the account than if they do.

Closing the account without paying the balance will not stop over the limit fees, or late fees.

Closing a credit card can have negative effects on your credit rating. Closing the accounts won't stop the late payment fees.

Closing the accounts won't necessarily stop the fees. If you read the account disclosure paperwork (usually provided when you apply for or receive your card) it should describe what happens. A lot of times, if they do let you close your account (or close it for you) they charge a fee (usually a certain percentage) on the unpaid balance every month until it's paid off, along with interest.

Depending on the balances on your cards, you might try calling a consumer credit counseling service, or you might try to work something out directly with the credit card companies - Just be honest and tell them the truth - it can't hurt to ask!

You are still responsible for making the minimum payment even if you cancel the card. If you wait to long before paying they will cancel the account for you and if you still don't pay they will send you to collections.

The best thing to do in my opinion is to start paying the minimum and let them know of your situation.

my mother said she was at a car dealership and they told her to do this with every credit card she has.

1. keep the credit card for about 6 months to a year.
2. pay the credit card off completely. this will make your credit score raise.
3. eventually more companies will send you credit cards with higher limits.
4. continue to repeat this process and your credit score will be excellent.

You can't close an account you owe money on.
