Should I get 2 credit cards?
I'm getting at least one credit card for two reasons. 1) to build credit and 2) to get some rewards. I do fairly well financially for a college student and honestly don't have to worry about money since I get loans to cover most of my tuition/room costs. I'm getting the citi mtvu card for sure. I'm thinking about getting the citi driver's edge card also. I drive a ton over the summer (60 miles in slow traffic daily) but I don't bring a car to school. So basically, I'll use the mtvu card when I go to restaurants and for entertainment and the driver's card for grocery stores and gas over the summer. Most everything I buy would be part of the enhanced rewards for that given card. Would having 2 cards negatively impact my credit score? I'll pay both off each month.

Having good credit score is depending on many factors. Such as your lenght of your credit history, your debt to credit available ratio, numbers of your request for credit in the past six months/past year and any negative report such as late pay, bankruptcy, etc.

To answer your direct question, it's not bad to have multiple CCs but make sure that you do not apply too often and as long as you or your cards has or doing these thing:
-paying the entire balance every month
-Grace period
-no annual fee

Most of ppl that have bad experience with CC is because they get carry away with their cards or have heard horror stories of others. Just remember, these cards you're using is not free money and the interest on the card is far more than any rewards that comes with it. If you can't pay for it, don't buy it.

as long as you paid off your balance each month on both cards, then it's ok (good actually). help you build credit history. If you don't then, you'll be a poor bardt4rd, the interest will eat you alive (i assume this is your first credit card, the interetst would be around 20 - 30% annully)

Trust me, it's easy to say "I'll pay them off every month" but then you have the card, you see something at Best Buy you like and you start thinking "well so what if I carry an extra 100 balance for a couple months, I'll pay it off" and then a couple days later you see something at the store you want and this continues on and on and soon you've got a maxed out card. You may think "I'd never do that" but it happens to most people. Get one card, just use it sparingly, you'll be thankful later on you did.

Only if you really feel you won't slip and will pay it off at the end of the month. Don't ever let yourself get over your head and you should be fine. I'd start with one, build that a bit then add another. Getting two cards now will go on the negative side of your credit until you prove yourself, but so will one.

credit cards?

DAS
No with proper use that will be fine. But to build credit, try paying on these account for a least some period of time, to show a payment history, rather than just paying it off in full. You can even open up a separate account, and deposit an the monthy amount in the account to pay on your account for a few months or so.

Lynn
No one really knows the real answer to that. They change the rules whenever they get ready, and for no reason.

A credit card is a system of payment named after the small plastic card issued to users of the system. In the case of credit cards, the issuer lends money to the consumer (or the user) to be paid later to the merchant. It is different from a charge card, which requires the balance to be paid in full each month. In contrast, a credit card allows the consumer to 'revolve' their balance, at the cost of having interest charged. Most credit cards are issued by local banks or Credit Unions, and are the same shape and size, as specified by the ISO 7810 standard.

Yes get them. As long as you can pay them off, it is a good thing. You won't have to pay interest if you keep up with paying them. A tip I have would be if you start using one card way more than the other, stop using that one. You can always keep the card too during the school year and just not use it as long as it is all paid off.

That's what I thought as a college student in basically your same situation... then my company would not send me statements on several occasions, and I'd forget to pay them w/o the reminder, and I'd get forty dollar finance charges... and by the way, my rewards thus far are about 1/4 of what these finance charges have caused me.

Sometimes technical problems might stand in the way of your paying them on time, too. It happens easily.

I say use a debit card and avoid multiple credit cards until you have a job... because even the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

no youll build up debt like nooones buisness. esp. if your in college!

jaja
No having 2 cards won't if you pay both off.

Bear
You actually need more than 2 major credit cards to build your credit. However, groceries & gas are bad ways to use them. Make a purchase on a card that you have the cash to pay for...then pay it off right away. Make sure the card doesn't have annual fees & that it has a good interest rate. Don't use it for little things b/c it will add up fast & get you in trouble.

Make sure the cards report to all 3 bureaus. They will continue to report even if your balance is "0" so make one purchase...pay it off...then leave them alone. Excellent way to build credit & you'll thank yourself when it's time to car & house shop.
