Should I pay on and old debt even though on my report?
I have two things on my credit report (negative) under the name with one company not scheduled to come off untill 2012. It has since been sold to another collection agency, do I pay this agency or no since it is already on my report with a diff company? So confused....

Pay off the current creditor. Make it your business to do the honorable, ethical thing and pay off the debt. Not only will it help your credit rating, but you'll feel better about yourself, unless you're just a deadbeat who doesn't care about who you rip off.

Girlfriend, this is a very difficult place. I too have found myself in the same situation.

I was laid off in 2002 and had to temp for 22 months.
In essence, I lost $40k for each year that I was laid off.

My almost perfect credit went down the tubes. once I become gainfuly employed, I contacted all 3 credit reporting agencies, reviewed my credit reports and make a number of payment arrangements until the debts were paid. The majority of them were paid/settled. This language is noted on a few of the paid accounts. Since they were more than 2 years old, my credit rating went down even lower.

Having said all of that, see if you can have your credit run by a Mortgage Broker. That is what I did. The mortgage broker had a MAP (Mortgage Action Plan). The MAP will tell you what to pay and what not to pay as well as how many points you would gain IF you did pay the items that should be paid.

The worst that could happen is that you will have an inquiry on your report, but at least you will have a direction to follow.

That is what I am doing and it is proving to be favorable.

ALSO - as someone else mentioned, you can keep disputing with Equifax and Trans Union - most widely used agencies.

I have had a little succes in having a judgment removed that way. Especially since it was my ex-husband's account.

Try something. A little effort is better than doing nothing.

Good Luck to You.

You need to write all 3 credit agencies stating that you have a duplicate write off and need it removed
you do not want it on there twice
as far as finding who to pay it to, I would just be careful you pay it to who holds the debt at this time and after payment you need to recheck your report and make sure it is updated showing you paid it off

Send a certified, return receipt letter to the new collection agency requesting validation of the debt to include proof they have the right to collect on this debt.

Once they validate, negotiate a settlement via letter -- don't talk to them on the phone, always get a papertrail. You may be able to get a delete for delete agreement. If this is a single entry item like cell phone, medical or utility bill, getting the item deleted will help your score. If it's a recurring entry like a credit card, the collection agency can only remove their entry. The original creditor's charge off will remain on your file.

The older the debt, the more likely you can settle for less. If the debt is more than 3 years old, offer 25%; 2 or 3 years old, offer 50%; less than 2 years old, offer 75%. Lump sum gets the best deals. Payment plans have to be short.

Get any settlement agreement in writing and keep it, along with your payment proof, forever. Do not allow the collection agency to have direct access to your bank account.

Sometimes when you pay off old debt even on really old collection debt it comes off your report. It's a good thing to get those off your report, so I'd say yes. I paid an old cell phone bill and it came off the negative colum for me.

Car buyer
You should dispute the duplicate entry on your credit report with all three credit bureaus. Even though it is scheduled to come off in 2012 the company can reopen the cliam on or before the expiration date in 2012 and it shall remain for another seven years so pay it if you owe it but only pay it once!

Some places you can settle for less than you owe. You need to make sure you get it in writing before you give them any money.

THat isn't very detailed... either way, when it comes to your finanaces, yahoo answers isn't really the place you should be looking for the answer. I would contact the most CURRENT agency and find out from them what to do and WHY it is on your report twice.
