Should I reactivate a credit card whose date is expiring?
I have a card that I never use. I understand that for FICO reasons I shouldn't cancel it but I have received a new one in the mail with a new expiration date and I'm wondering which would be better. NOT to activate it or TO activate it and just not use it. I have another card that I use as needed.

Activation is a security feature. The account is open when or not you activate the card.

Helen Scott
Not activating it doesn't mean it's cancelled...if you don't want it anymore, you need to call and cancel it, regardless of whether it's expired or not.

The Wife
If you make just one purchase a month and pay it off in full, it can help your credit more than an unused card can.

To activate a new card, and "not" use it, will cost you a fee for
"not usung it." So don't activate the new one. Cut it up.<}:-})

Well, if you don't use the card you allready have then I would cancel it, and activate the new one...

I keep one extra credit card that I don't use. You never know when you might need it, and it's good to have "just in case." And if ever there was an emergency you wouldn't want to bother with activating it first. If it doesn't cost you anything, then I suggest activating it, and shreading your old one.

What do you mean "FICO reasons"

If you don't wish to use the credit card you received in the mail, just dont activate it.because fico is monitoring everything and they see that you are not using your credit card, which is not good for your credit score...

i would call the company and be like, "my card is about to expire, i want you to drop my interest or i am not getting a new one."
unless of course, the company already sends you a new one by default.

As long as there is NO annual FEE to use this card, reactivate it and use it once every few month to keep it open...by using it to get a cup of coffee at starbucks (and pay off the five bucks) the account stays open...it is highly possible that if you do not use this card that just came, your acocunt will be closed by the card issuer and the point will be moot anyway.

Alex
Its pretty simple. If you receive any benefits at all from having that new credit card then activate it. If there is ABSOLUTLEY no change in your life regarding that card then don't activate it. Unless you wanna look all fancy and wanna show off your card to others lol.
