Should I sell my husband's pickup?
My husband has had a serious stroke. Shall I sell his pickup. Payments are $500 plus. He may not live and probably will not drive again if he does. His buddy thinks I should wait. If he dies I will have to come up with burial expenses ($1600 for cremation) and I will have to return his last SS check. We barely make our payments now. What to do?

Carlos Cruz
My prayers are with you.

Whether your husband survives his ordeal or not should have no bearing on whether you sell the pickup.

Contact the finance company immediately that carries the note and explain your dire situation and have them come pick up the pickup. It will reflect as a voluntary auto repossesssion on your credit report but it will eliminate the collection calls that are sure to follow.

If the pickup is under your husbands name and responsibility ONLY, you must explain this to the finance company in writing and deem yourself as indigent if this is so the case.

You say in your message that 'we barely make our payments now'. This is a strong indicator that the 'pickup must go'. If you review your necessary expenses, you may find another use for the '$500 plus' that is spent on the pickup.

If his 'buddy' feels so strongly that you should wait, have his 'buddy' consider transferring the pickup title, the monthly pickup payments and the responsibility of making those monthly payments over into his own name and when your husband recovers, his 'buddy' can offer the pickup back to your husband if your husband and you can afford to make the payments.

Right now you should get out from under this one heavy burden of the 'pickup payment' and focus on caring for your husband.

God Bless.

Wow this is a tough call, I think in this situation though I would ask myself what your husband would want you to do or would do if the situation were in his hands to handle, I am sorry to hear about your problems, I think if it were me I would try and start the process of selling the truck unless you have insurance on there that if something were to happen to your husband meaning death the truck would be paid off. I hope this helps. My prayers are with you.

Sell it! He is more important than a truck!

CJ
I'm so sorry. I'm sure your husband will understand if you sell. and when he makes a full recovery and he can drive he can buy another truck.

Is there any reason that you, as a married couple, don't have life insurance? I think you should sell it, unless you're upside-down in your payments. If that's the case, you may want to sell your vehicle and use his in the meantime.

J.R.
Why would he have a $500 payment if he is on SSI? You need to sell it whether he lives or not. While I am not trying to be callous, you can't afford this vehicle either way. Sell it.

He is not a position to answer you, I assume.

I believe the buddy has his own interest in mind. You wait, you really need cash, and he offers a little bit.

Frankly, if you have to make the decision, you have to consider the finances. At $500 a month, you may still owe more than you could sell it for, in which case selling it puts you in the hole. It's called being upside-down in the loan - you owe more than it's worth. If you can do it for profit, or even just to cover the payoff and end the monthly payments, you probably do want to sell it.

I think it would hurt your husband's health to sell his truck because it might distress him if he really loves his truck.
It would basically be telling him without verbally telling him, that you don't think he's going to make it...and that could hurt his recovery.

For your situation I have another idea. Please check out http://modestneeds.org/ and put in a request for assistance. Modest Needs Foundation was created with the idea of keeping situations from spiraling out of control for want of just a bit of financial help. It's a great organization. Make sure you have all the documentation ready to share with them because they do check out each request for validity.

PS for anyone else reading this http://modestneeds.org is tax deductible to donate to, it is a GREAT organization. Please go to their site and read about it.

I hope this helps and I hope your husband will surprise everyone with a wonderful recovery.

Hugs!!!

First all the best for you all!

Sell the car. Cars are so expensive. Or buy a little one if you need a car.

mrysiewicz@sbcglobal.net
I would say think about your husband and if it has no sentimental value to you do nto keep it. If you need to pay for a burial, make sure it is done properly with respects and if it means to sell the truck to help pay for the cremation at all means I would say sell it.

sell it.. you need money now.. dont think on the burial.. your husband is still alive.. think what you could do now .. you are so selfish if you are going to think about the what you could get later once he is DEAD!
