Should a 12 year old have a credit card?
Why? or Why not?

Yes, definitely give your kid a credit card! You won't regret it, I promise!

A twelve year old should learn how to properly manage money. If that twelve year old gets a false notion that credit = money he or she will have a long, stressful history of debt that could end in bankruptcy or litigation. It's best for them to have cold hard cash and let them see that once you spend it, it's gone.

Trev23
No , because they have no way of paying back the money they spend.

Carl P
No. The one who writes the check to the credit card company should have the card only. Else you never understand the econmics of life.

emilyannrehm
NO. They have no way to pay the bill themselves, and if a parent just picks up the tab, the child will not realize how much money they are spending...because it doesn't really affect them. It is far too risky, financially.

I didn't get a credit card until I was 17, and that was only because I was heading to college. Ever since then, I use my card with care and always pay the bill in full...because it's MY debt. At 12, I doubt a child would have the means to repay it themselves.

Um no they have no income to pay it back.

For what?
Buying latest games and t-shirts?
To do shopping for home?
Buy daddy a big screen TV?
Or just show off to friends ???
There must be a valid and important reason behind every decision for minors.

Probably not yet. He probably isn't responsible enough at that age.

No, to young.. Give cash if they need anything or take them to get it..

First of all a 12 year old can not get a credit card as you are not old enough and they would not issue one to you. You also need to have a job. You do need to pay back what you charged but like I said they would not issue you one anyway.

No. Teach him/her about proper usage of money, first.

No way, they are not mature enough. There is other way to start teaching them about money such as managing an allowance. If I was 12 and was given a credit card I would max it out even if I was told not to, because even though I got in trouble I would still have the cool stuff that I bought. And then once my parents paid it off, if they were suckers enough to let me keep it, I would max it out again and just say it was an accident.

To answer your question, I'll ask another question. Should parents that are even considering giving a 12 year old a credit card be allowed to procreate further? My answer is no, to both questions, incidentally. You should be teaching them about money and credit, not getting their feet wet with a credit card. It's your credit on the line when they wrack up the debt, since you cosigned for it, and it's not like they can work off the debt, since they're freaking 12. Giving a 12 year old a credit card is a thoroughly bad idea.

hang_on_sloopy
I think it depends on the maturity of the 12 year old. I had a checking account when I was 16. I had a job and my own money and I was very responsible with it. It was not attached to my parents' account, so they were not a safety net for me.
Though I was very mature for my age, I don't know that I could have handled a cc at 12. If my parents were just showing me some things about credit and using it as a learning tool, okay....but to be completely responsible for it? Nah. I'd say 16 is a good age.
:-)

Well I would have loved one at 12, but no because its irresponsible

No if they want plastic then the parents should get them a prepaid debit card and put their allowance on that No one should have a credit card that somone else will be responsible for the charges on unless it is their spouse who will be footing the bill
