Should credit card solicitations by mail be prohibited?
If you throw these solicitations away without shredding them, you open yourself to identity theft. Why should the banks be allowed to place your financial safety in jeopardy every day with this insane influx of junk mail? I think this should be made illegal. Anybody agree?

It is a free country and the credit card compnies have the right to advertise their financial products. The consumers also have the right not to accept their offers. The credit card is offered only to people over 18 years.

Only if the word " NO " is banned. They aren't dangerous, they are just solicitations for your business.
You can also call the companies that offer them and ask to be taken off their mailing list.
If every thing that people didn't like were made illegal then the rule of law itself would cease to exist.

remixx
Well I don't feel safe with the ones that call on the phone because I hate giving out any personal information over phone like my ssn and where I work. I'd rather get it though the mail that way I'm not pressured in to opening a account or being scamed. .

Shred Guy
No. Commercial speech is protected under the first amendment. But yes, this does open you up to identity theft.

Get Going
Yes, I agree, here is how to stop them from sending them. Begin by calling the Consumer Credit Reporting Industry "Opt-in and Opt-out" number at: 888-567-8688. You will be asked for your name and address and a form will be mailed to you. Fill it out, send it back and the mailings will stop. or go to https://www.optoutprescreen.com/ to do it online

There is no way that it can or will be illegal. Personally, I trash the solicitations which I receive. I apply for credit when, and if I can. Some people are just weaker in that sense, but doesn't that go along with most of the things in this country, people are weak when it comes to certain things. Those certain things should then be illegal as well, right?

Henry
No, I think you're making a big deal out of nothing.

First off, such solicitations do not contain information that ordinary mail does not, such as your name, address, etc. They don't have account numbers or any other sensitive information.

Second, these offers are the only source of credit for many people. They get them in the mail, they apply, and voila, they start building credit!

Third, If this is keeping you up at night then simply shred them, and shred all mail with your information on it. How hard is it?

I think they should be illegal on so many levels. Firstly, I think that banks are irresponsible in encouraging people to go into debt in the first place. And the credit card apps in the mail does just that.

Secondly for me is the Identity theft thing. I do shread all of the applications that I get but, still when you get so many it is hard on your shredder.

I absolutely agree that they should be prohibited. I receive several of them each week. My mail has been stolen a couple of times out of my mailbox -- who knows what kind of information came in the mail on those days!!

shelly
Yes. A company I previously did business with kept all of my personal information on a laptop (including ssn), which was stolen. It took 3 weeks to notify me, during which my mail was stolen, checks on my credit card written, cards reported lost so my card was denied, new cards opened, you can't imagine the nightmare the person who picked through my mail put me through. I believe we should #1 have all USPS mailboxes with keys, #2 have more ebills available, and #3 the right to have all mail returned to the sender so they know you do not want to receive their offers in the mail, even bulk mail and catalouges.
