What do you mean you're not legally obligated to pay? Did the companies charge you off? It's going to stay on your report for at least two more years.
If you were charged off, you still owe it; pay it. It'll be better for your credit report and will allow you to get a better deal on your future car loan. |

yes ,you should pay off existing debt before incurring additional debt - reason: credit worthiness, if you cannot pay the credit cards how will you be able to pay a car note.
however, you said your not obligated to pay, did you file bankruptcy and they were discharged? what communication did you recv that gave you the position that you no longer are responsible? only thru bankruptcy can you no longer be hld liable for the cards - in that event according to the cbr(s) the debt will remain as a discharged debt on your cbr for 4-10 yrs depending on the credit reporting agency. |

simply call the credit card company...make arrangements to pay a set amount every month... no fluctuations in the payment plan. They should show this on your credit report. That will help your credit to recover, while you can purchase your car. Unfortunately, I think you shouldn't purchase anything more than a beater because you are in debt. People need to learn how to manage credit and their finances early, rather than having to learn about their mistakes when they are unable to get loans for important things (ex: student loans, home loans). Take a bus or ride a bike. The great thing about a bike is you can claim that you want to stay in shape, and people will applaud you for it. They wont ever suspect how cheap you are being! |

Get out of debt FIRST! You will be glad you did this every time you need anything requiring a credit check (like buying a car - you'll get a better rate). Plus, it's just good to always be out of the negative. ;-) |

If they are 5 years old, and have been charged off, I would say nottotouch them. Paying onthem will make themlook like a Current derogatory item, rather than an aged one, which will most certainlyeffectyour FICO score poorly. |

<giggle> Don't you love all this "pay your bills" nonsense?
If you are sure the SOL has run out on these debts, then IGNORE THEM!
Whether you pay these or not is NOT going to help your credit score. Any talk that it will is fiction. You will still have poor credit, and see how easy it will be to get a loan on your new car.
Save your money and pay cash for your car, or at least have a very large down payment. That will help to convince the dealers to offer you financing (maybe at a high rate).
In 2 more years all those negative reports will be remove from your credit. Then you will be ok. |

get out of debt first, if you wait long enough...you'll pay double for that car you're saving for just because of the interest |

You are in a prime position to make a deal. Call the creditor and offer 1/2 of your balance. They will often times take that, maybe less. Then move forward with the car. |

You'll always be legally obligated to pay, unless you filed for bankcruptcy. They'll appear on your credit report for five years; longer if they are then dragged out to a collection agency or lawyers. If you still own money it's probably not best to invest in a car, also you may have trouble getting a loan with outstanding bills. |
