Should my fiance cancel her credit cards after we get married?
I currently have an excellent credit score, and my fiance has a very good score. We both have had credit cards for 3+ years, and when we get married i wish to keep our credit cards and finances under a joint account. Does it make sense for me to have her cancel her current cards and use my account? Will that have an effect on our combine credit score? How does that work?

Lets clear up one myth. There is no such thing as a "joint" credit score. You each have your own score.

If you both share the same credit cards, loans, etc...you will each end up with the same reports, but on separate names.

I see absolutely no advantage in your case in trying to combine two good credit histories. You need to maintain them. It's a sad fact that marriages do end in a divorce, and trying to rebuild credit after your husband/wife destroyed it is difficult.

OK, that said, what will happen if you cancel her cards is the credit bureau will lower your credit score. Not much but it will happen. It would be better to just keep the cards and not use them.

I would go over all of the cards you both have and find the one with the best interest rates/features. Get both of you placed on that card, and use it.

Why? Because when you start applying for new credit cards in both names, it will also effect your credit score. Read the link below for info on this.

You sound like you have everything under control...good luck.

I would call the individual credit card companies and ask their advice. They are motivated to have her continue to use them, and will be accommodating. They may agree to issue the same cards in her married name, or change them to joint accounts with you.

My wife has credit cards in her own name so she has a credit history even if I should die.

Maybe you should cancel yours. Why is it hers that have to go?

If you are going to cancel any keep the best no matter whose it began life as. You can add her name to yours and she can add your name to hers. There is probably no reason to cancel any unless they have an annual fee, or if you have trouble spending money that you shouldn't because you have a limit.

Be sure and keep them paid off, they will do you a lot more good.

she should keep them just make sure they are paid off. It will help when you guys go to buy a house or other things. your score is based on a number of things one being the length of your ceridt history and the amount you have to the amount you owe. And i know you don't want to here this but if you guys get a divorce it will be easier for her to get her life back on track if she had things that are in her name bank accounts cards. And harder for you to screw her over. Same for you. You should keep some things that are just you and not joint with her

When you get married, your credit scores also join. So, there is no real advantage to cancelling her cards. I would call each company and ask them to issue a card to the other spouse. You would get a card on all her accounts and she would get a card on all of your accounts.

Lets clear up a few things.

As a previous poster said there is no such thing as a "joint credit" file. A credit file is unique because it contains your Social Security number and Birth date.

When you get married and if your wife takes your name all she needs to do is send the credit bureaus a copy of her new license and a copy of her Social Security card and they will change her name. Her previous name will appear in the section titled, Other Names in which credit granted or something close.

You should keep the credit cards with the highest limits and open the longest and pay them off every month and never charge more than 50% of your credit limit. If you owe balances on any cards don't close any of the other accounts but put them away and don't use them. If you close them you will be only reporting accounts with balances on your credit file. If your balances are more than 50% of your credit line your score will go down.
