Jameson W | Should teens have their own credit cards? |

NO WAY, DO NOT GIVE A TEENAGER A CREDIT CARD!!!
Debit cards = yes. You should consider one of those prepaid cards, that way they don't have to carry cash around. You set the amount they can spend. And you can track their spending. You can be involved without it destroying ANYONE's credit score and without placing anyone in debt!!!
Teenagers do not have the knowledge to be responsible with a credit card. They don't know any better. Don't give a teenager a credit card! I repeat! Don't give a teenager a credit card!!!

They also need their own jobs |

Yeah only if the parents taught the teens how to use the credit card responsibly and the card is in the teens name and he or she is paying the card. and has their own job. |

No way...I have a teenage son and I don't want him to have one until he at least has a job but even then, he should wait. Credit cards can be so dangerous. |

NO! |

No. Teens should learn the value of a dollar adn learn to save up for things they want, not run up credit card debt for toys. |

If they have their own jobs and are responsible, yes. If it's just another thing they're leeching off mommy and daddy for, then no. |

well it is possible for teen to have credit cards so if your teen is responsible and you trust them with an economical enviroment they should be allowed to have 1 |

NO! Absolutely NOT!!! if they default, then the parents get stuck paying it, especially if it's maxed out. I'd avoid this like the PLAGUE & RUN the other way as fast as I could. |

not unless there parents have no need for their children to learn the value of a dollar. That is part of the reason America is in so much trouble financially. Half of the adults in this country can't handle a credit card and people want to hand them out to children with no means to pay their debt. |

If they are responsible and understand the overall meaning of credit and the good and bad that can come with it! |

If you are a parent and want to teach your teen about the responsibility that comes with having a credit card, open one with a small limit like $500. When the bill comes and a payment is due, show them the amount of interest they will be paying if the bill isn't paid in full. I did this with my daughter. Somehow when the bill came for the great jeans she paid $60 for they didn't seem so great anymore. She learned to shop more wisely. |

I'm a teen, which puts me, I guess, into a unique situation.
My opinion is yes, if they are around 14 and responsible enough to handle it. Of course this depends on both the parent and the teen, as well as their relationship.
The amount of money they get/earn per month should also be an issue. But in many ways it's useful to get to learn how to handle money at an early age, especially if you can do so in a properly controlled way.
That said, debit cards are a safer option. |
