What type of unpaid debt.?
He might be out looking for you for a bad check? That is fraud. If it was just a debt to a store or something, that would be turned over to a collection bureau. They would send letters and make phone calls, but would not hire a peace officer to track you down. Sounds suspicious to me.
Or was the debt to a court? It might have been a constable trying to serve you with a garnishment order. How big is the alleged debt? And why have you gone so long without paying it?

Just reread your question. You said it was for unpaid credit cards. Now it sounds even more suspicious. If it was visa/mc/discover they would not do that.. if it was for a lot of money from a local department store credit card they might hire a constable to serve you. Also, this might depend on what state you are in.

There are no warrants issued for credit card debts. If it was a cop and he had a warrant, it was for a crime, such as bad checks, credit card fraud, etc.

That's crap. Being in debt is not illegal (otherwise our entire government would be behind bars).

He must've been there for some other reason.

Even if he was there just to serve papers, he wouldn't discuss what you were being sued for.

I'd double-check this story.

he might have just been serving "some papers". Once they get a hold of the place where you work, they will start garnishing your check...

Unless there was fraud in the unpaid credit card you can not be arrested. Now in some jursidictions they have the sherriff or other peace officer serve papers when a suit is filed against you. But these officers are "supposed" to know the law and should not say anything about arresting you and warrants being issued if that is not the case. There job is to just deliver the summons.

So either your neighbor misunderstood him, you have some other issues you need to figure out, or he was actually someone using fake pretenses to try and find you. If it was someone using false pretenses you may have other legal means you can take, but without knowing the exact person or situation it could be hard to do anything about that.

You should contact the creditor and find out the status of the debt. If they in fact did file a suit against you, you need to take care of it. If you just ignore it they won't arrest you for not showing up they will just file a default judgement against you. Once they do that, you may find one day that your wages are going to be garnished(if allowed in your state) or your bank accounts have been frozen.

If you do talk to the creditor do not acknowedge the debt but ask for proof that it is yours. You also need proof of the last delinquency date. You may be outside of the Statute of Limitations, which is the time limit that creditors have to sue you. This is anywhere from 3-8 years depending on the state you live in

U may go to small claims court and thats about it..

There are 2 things possible going on here.

1. The collection agancy is looking to server you witha Summons and Complaint. If they are located out of town they will usually use the civil department of the Sheriff office for the county you live in. They can not arrest you for collections, however they should be able to because it is jsut like theft.

2. If they already have a jusdgment and they served an "Order for debtor examination" and you did not appear, then you most likly have a warrant out for your arrest. This is nto because you did not pay your bill, it is because you did not show up for an ordered court apperance.

Call the agency and try to work out a reapyment plan.

Go to the cop shop and turn yourself in before they do it the hard way !! Your debts don't just go away by themselves !! Explain it to the cops they might go easy on you alot easier than if they have to come and get you !! Yes they can arrest you !! WARRANT!!!! LOL
