So my bank pounded me w/ overdraft fees for charges less than 2 dollars!?
i already called them and they told me that they couldnt reverse it b/c this has happened before and they reversed some charges for me in the past. but the bottom line, is it is BULL that the only reason i'm overdrafting is b/c they throw in other stupid charges to. So, for a two dollar item, i got charged 35 dollars!!!! is there any way to NOT pay the charges, close the account and go to another bank or am i gonna have to pay the charges before i do anythign to fix this.

I agree with all of the posters. I'm not rushing to the defense of banks, because I've been hit with my fair share of overdraft and NSF fees myself to last a lifetime, but it's not like they don't give you means to give you fair warning. Banks not only offer online banking to give you real-time access to transactions that happen with your account, but also, telephone banking, and even mobile banking as well. And some even offer overdraft protection either in the form of linking a savings account or even a credit card. It's important to take advantage of what they offer to monitor your account, so these things don't happen.

They wont let you close the account until the balance is paid off and if you dont pay it off, they will keep adding fees. But i got a better story for ya. I had automatic payments taken out of my account and i wanted it to stop, so i withdrew all my money from my account and closed it. The bank re-opened my account subracted 250$ + overdraft fees because i didnt have enough money in my CLOSED account!!! They called me 3 months later saying i owed way over 750$ and i told them, i closed that account months ago...thats when they told me they re-opened it!! Lucky for me i didnt have to pay it because i went bankrupt at that time....if you call that lucky!

But anyway, you getting charged this is like an education that only cost you 35 dollars. You have to keep better track of your money. Always balance your checkbook and try to always keep a min balance of at least 50 dollars just in case you forgot to add something in your checkbook.

Dont worry...we have all paid that fee at one time or another. Some of us learn from it and some of us keep paying it year after year.

The bank is within their rights if you overdrafted. When you opened your account you were given the conditions of charges and what they would be. The bank also has sent you any updates to that policy. You overdraft for a nickle or $500 expect charges. Most banks give you a freebie or two, but it sounds like you burned them up already. You can settle with your bank and then look to open a new accout in another bank or credit union that has terms you like more, or you can talk to a bank manager and try to get the fees reduced/removed but you're going to have to have a better reason than "oops." You either need to keep a larger minimum balance in your account or you need to track your spending closer to avoid fees.

Credit Unions tend to be a little less "fee happy" than banks, but can often cause location issues as they tend to be stand alone or small chains. The ATM networks and online services tend to be good, but if you move a significant disatnce there's not likely to be a office branch where you move to. You may find that you need to set up a new account with a new Credit Union in your new area.

You're gonna have to pay the charges. You'll get this, in some form or another, with all banks. You need to better manage your accounts or set up an automatic overdraft protection line of credit.

Reality Check
It doesn't matter if it's 1 penny or $1,000....you over drafted your account, your bank had to cover the difference, and you owe them the money for this. This is very common, because most people live paycheck-to-paycheck, and cut their accounts very close, and sometimes don't factor in certain charges which may only put them a couple bucks in the red.

The bank has no obligation to dismiss the charges, as outrageous as they may sound. You mention that "this has happened before", and they have reversed the charges in the past. They probably give a certain amount of 'grace' reversals, in hopes that you will take some better financial responsibility, but if you are continuing to live beyond your means, these are the consequences.

It's better than bouncing the check....the $35 fee the bank charges to cover your debt that you couldn't afford, saved you a lot of headaches that a bounced check can cause, including the cops knocking at your door for passing bad checks.

Consider this a lesson.

It doesn't matter to them if it were two dollars or two cents. That's how banks are making their money. Your going to have to pay them. Do not and I repeat do not just bail and move to another bank. They will report the unpaid amt to Chex Systems and you won't be able to open new acct in the future. Pay them and then move to another bank or pay them and then stay put. Be sure whatever your decision is to pay close attention to your acct and when they post charges so that you can make a deposit to cover these charges before hand.

Good luck to you!

Micki
If you don't pay the charges, they cannot close the account. If the account is in a negative balance, you will probably incur additional charges on a daily basis for every day that your account remains in a negative balance. THEN your name goes on the Chexsystems list and you'll never get an account.

Pay the stinking $35 and avoid yourself a LOT of unnecessary grief in the future.

transitangst
Keep a better eye on your account, is all I can say. You have to pay the charges, otherwise they won't close the account and may even report you to a credit bureau.

This happened to me a few years ago. Most banks will reverse the charges the FIRST time you do it especially if there are multiple transactions causing multiple overdraft fees. So they'll forgive you once, but after that it's on you. It s*cks because even if you are over by $1, you see the $30 (or more) fee.

This is a pet peeve of many banking customers. You end up paying 40 bucks for a cup of coffee.

You are stuck if the bank doesn't take pity on you. You have to pay or they will go after you for more charges.

You can't go to another bank until this is cleared up. You see, this will follow you where ever you go. So, pay it for your sake and try to find a bank that doesn't have the stupid charges that caused you to be overdrawn.

I understand how you feel. I got hit with overdraft fees with buying my favorite drink at Starbucks every few months a couple years ago. So my $3.36 (back then) coffee ends up costing nearly $34. Yes, it seems unfair. But I was wrong to spend money that wasn't mine. We all sign papers when we open accounts and it explicitly states what will happen in a given situation. You have my sympathy, but it happened and now you have to pay for it. Get some money in your account to cover the overdraft fees before taking any more money out of it.
