Social Security Numbers?
So I'm sitting here with my girlfriend, and her sister - and we want to know how they come up with your social security number? Like why do some start with 364, or 593 or 591??

The first 3 are area numbers - The first three numbers originally represented the state in which a person first applied for a Social Security card. Numbers started in the northeast and moved westward. This meant that people on the east coast had the lowest numbers and those on the west coast had the highest. Since 1972, the SSA has assigned numbers and issued cards based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the original application form. Since the applicant's mailing address doesn't have to be the same as his residence, his area number doesn't necessarily represent the state in which he resides. For many of us who received our SSNs as infants, the area number indicates the state we were born in. You can find out which area numbers go with each state at SSA.gov: Social Security Number Allocations.

Nathan
mine is "346-87-8327"

I was told that the first three digits are related to where you were born.

Do I know you? ya right LoL

I believe it depends on when and where you were born

Where you were born...eastern states...westcoast etc...the first 3 numbers are for the state in which it was given...also the next 3 numbers are the order in which it was given...and the last for are randomly generated.

It all depends on year ish you were born. Like the time span. My brothers and mine are the same beginning and middle and we're 3 yrs apart. But my fiance's is completly different and him and I are 4 years apart. For sure I'm not... lol

At one time the cards indicated where an individual lived. The first three number indicated the location of the individual. Cards with 0xx for the first three number indicated a legal Allan. numbers 1xx were in the north east part of the country and 2xx indicated mid to southern east coast and so forth. That has now changed the cards are randomly issued and location has no bearing on the card number

I believe it has something to do with the state you were born in. I was born in Ky and most of our numbers are 40---....401...402....403 . 404...

The 300 numbers were the state of Indiana and the 500 numbers were the state of Alabama....

Don
The first three numbers are considered the "Area" number and prior to 1972 was based on what office it was issued. Since then, it has been based on the Zip Code of the mailing address of the recipient. Numbers begin with 0 in the Northeast and increase going West.

The middle two digits are the group number. They have no special geographic or data significance but merely serve to break the number into conveniently sized blocks for orderly issuance.

The last four digits are serial numbers. They represent a straight numerical sequence of digits from 0001-9999 within the group.
