Square One Debt Settlement - I'm ready to get rid of my high cc's. This company contacted me and sounds good. ?
I open my own acct in my bank giving me control; pay them 15% the first 6 mo; next yr 60% I get paid/40% they get paid; next yr I'm fully investing into my acct for them to begin negociating. Payoff approx 28 mo. My debt is approx 20K. Anyone deal with these group. TASC is a mangaging partner of this group and the owner is an attorney. ?????

TASC is not a managing partner they are only an association formed to lobby congress. Those Square One fees are on the higher side of the scale when it comes to companies. According to the BBB they have only been in business since Sept 2007, not long enough to have a real track record. My company, US Consumer Advocate has settled two of my accounts only charged 10% over 5 months and 15% of the savings which gives them the incentive to get me the best deal and they have almost a 5 year track record. They are a member of USOBA, check them out I spoke with Steve.

Please bear in mind that if you use ANY settlement company, your credit score will go down, badly. Using these companies, in the eyes of the credit bureaus, is the same as filing for bankruptcy. If they is any way of doing it yourself, you will be much better off!

Sounds like a scam to me.

If you paid off the debt yourself in 28 months you'd only have to pay about $720 a month to reach that goal & not pay anyone for the privilege. It sounds like alot, but it really isn't if you look at what you can trim from your budget (look at extra's on insurance, cable, late fees, ect). Sell some stuff on ebay, get a part time job on the weekend.

If I was you I'd call my creditors & request that my interest rate is lowered. This is what that company would do & they say it on their site. Just be nice & calm & if the person can't do it, ask to speak to their supervisor or whomever can authorize it.

It's tough, but doable on your own.

What you need to know about debt settlement firms:

Your credit card companies are not going to offer you settlements like 50%, for example, if you are current (not behind) on your payments. If credit card companies offered settlements to people who are current on their payments, then everyone would be calling them up and asking for 50% settlements. Basically, the only way you can get into a position to negotiate settlements is to deliberately let your accounts go into default. This is exactly what debt settlement firms do....They take a monthly amount from you and use that to build a “settlement” account, which will go towards paying the “settlement” at a certain date. Your creditors will deliberately not be paid. They will not be happy about this.

If you are current on your accounts, this process will ruin your credit rating as your accounts will all go into default. Your creditors are under no obligation whatsoever to accept settlements from any debt settlement firm you hire. Their response might be to serve you papers and take you to court.

Debt settlements "can" be a viable alternative to filing for BK....you just need to be aware that if you currently have good credit...the debt settlement firms will deliberately let all your accounts charge-off/default to put them into a position to negotiate settlements. It can be a stressful and unpredictable process....As your accounts all go into default...you will get increasingly aggressive collection calls from debt collectors. It is "typical" that creditors offer settlements for defaulted credit card debt....They often do this in lieu of loosing everything if you file for BK.....

HOWEVER, you can never predict how any one creditor will respond to defaulted debt. They might decide to take you to court and get a judgment against you. Debt settlement firms have no power whatsoever to stop creditors from taking this action and they have no power to force creditors to accept settlements.

****If you have already defaulted on your cards....make your own settlement offers...you can do this on your own and it puts you in control. If you do...get all settlement terms IN WRITING PRIOR to paying them.

If you are NOT in default on your credit cards, the debt settlement process will ruin your credit and there’s no guarantee that your creditors will accept settlements. It can be an unpredictable and risky process.

Don't do it. All such companies care about is getting fees from you. First, look at the interest rates on your cards, talk to your bank, or call the companies, and negotiate a lower interest rate by telling them you will be using it to pay down debt. Also, if you have a card with low interest, and one with high, see if you can negotiate a "no transfer fee" from the higher card to the lower. If the card holder or bank agrees, transfer as much from the high card to the low card as you can. Then start making payments higher than just the interest on both cards. The interest rate on the high card will drop as you pay down your debt. making it easier every month... your strategy here is to continue paying $20 a month or more OVER the minimal amount on both cards.
By doing this, you will pay off both cards faster, and your credit score will improve.

If you do not have a low card, look around online for one, and have them send you an application by MAIL: DO NOT apply online, because theives are always on the prowl to steal sensitive info. Once you get the application in the mail, fill it out, and add a typed note of how you intend to use this card to pay down debt. The no-interest, no- transfer-fee for a year cards are your best bet.

There's absolutely NO reason for you to go with a "debt settlement" company. All they do is suck you dry of what little money you have. Do it my way, and you'll be much better off: I know, because it's what I did. And one last thing, if you have any toys you no longer use, like a jet ski, boat, etc., consider selling them, and using that money to pay down even faster. You'll be amazed at how your stress level drops once you see your debt dropping. After that, live by the mantra, "If I can't pay for it in cash, I don't need it."

All this company you mention cares about is making a buck off you, and your trust that THEY know what's best. Just the fact that the company is owned by an attorney should put up a warning flag.

before you decide on this you need to check out all of the details.. some of these have limits on what you can do and charge large fees... Make sure you check this with the better business bureau..

I recommend debt settlement but my dad used Total Debt Solutions which partners with a company in California called New Life to offer debt settlement. New Life has been in business for years and is listed with the BBB. My dad used them with great results getting debt free in 36 months. He held the money in a trust account; this isn't just sending money to some faraway company each month and saying a prayer that you dont get ripped off. Check out the source website and their free evaluation form or toll free number; they can help! These companies' programs are all about the same; it's all about picking the 1 you trust.
