BronzedPete | Strange Debt Letter Help? |
I received a letter off a debt collection company this morning saying I owe them nearly a thousand pounds, and unless I sort it out they will start bankruptcy proceedings against me, after they have investigated my financial position? My total debt (excluding my mortgage) is under £300 which checks out with my credit file, and this "debt" doesn't appear on my credit file. I don't recall this debt and I am solvent but it's got me a bit worried that I might lose my house to pay this company their £1000.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. |

I have had these letters from so called debt collection agencies. They are nothing more than money grubbing parasites and I took great pleasure in telling them that. Never heard of them again.
I contacted nationaldebtline.co.uk and they sent me sample letters to send to these scroungers.
The first thing is do not give them your phone number, only contact them by writing.
Ask them for evidence that you owe them this money. Under the Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection rules, it is unfair to send demands for payment where there is doubt you are the debtor.
If they ignore your letter and continue to write, under the OFT rules, it is considered physical and psychological harassment.
You can report them to Trading Standards and the OFT. If they belong to a trade association, you can report them to that as well.
Do not lose any sleep over this. It is just some chancers trying to put the frighteners on you to get money. Most back off when they have to start providing evidence.
Nor can they blacken your credit file without just cause. To register you as a debtor when you are not, would open them up for claims of libel. |

Is it a official letter?
I mean, my friend gets these all the time and it is usually a fix for them to get his bank details. Phone your bank (or whoever you are in debt with) and see what the problem is... Its probably a hoax to just get your money!

There is a high certainty that this is a scam. Do not give them any financial details.
But, do write back, deny there is such a debt and ask for full details of the 'alleged' debt.
You would certainly recall a £1000 debt but, would you recall a debt of say £80 - £100, perhaps for an unpaid fine or something, that could have been merrily ticking up penalty charges for years?
I would not lose any sleep over it though until they lay out who you are supposed to owe it to. Had you owed this amount you would have been getting increasingly nasty letters for ages.
Do not on any account give them any bank or credit card details, in fact no personal details at all beyond your name and address which they already have, until you find out more. |

Simple, contact the company and ask them to set out exactly what this debt is supposidly for. If you don't recognise it as a debt you've incurred then take the letter to the citizens advice bureau and ask them to investigate. Good luck, and whatever you do, do not pay over any money unless you are 100% sure you owe it and that the company is legit. |

You should contact them to find out the details...worse case..could be identity fraud, so you need to deal with this asap. You may find they are available today and tomorrow...best not to ignore these things |

Sounds like a scam to me - I've seen a couple of similar questions on Yahoo in the last few weeks. Contact the company and seek full details (but don't give them your phone number as they will call and call). |

Respond, in writing, that you never heard of them, that you believe this is fraud, that you have no debts to them, that you require something bearing your signature evidencing the debt, and carbon copy the letter to the local police, and any other authority that you have in England. They will run for the hills. Do not give them ANY information because they are scammers and the letter is an attempt to get your information in identity theft. |

check your credit report with experian online, it is free...if it's not on there you don't owe it. Could be that someone with a similar name to you living elsewhere owes the money and the debt company are "fishing"hoping they've got the right person. |
