Nope! You signed, you are responsible if he fails to pay. So either pay it off or deal with it. You could file bankruptcy, but that's a bit extreme. word to the wise.... never sign for anything... not even your children unless you can afford to pay it off in full.

Yes, you can pay off the debt you cosigned for.
That is what it means to cosign.

The alternative is to live without credit and build up your own resources. But you may still be required to pay off that debt.

Hello
Either pay it and take him to court (if your not still with him) to retrieve the money or ask him to see if he can refinance the loan. That's why a person has to be careful about co-signing. If a person can't qualify on their own that's a pretty good indication they have bad credit which makes them high risk.

Kelsey
No. Why would lenders require a co-signer if they could just be removed? Your option is to pay the debt or not, and deal with the consequences if you don't. You obviously care about your credit since you're asking this question so my advice is to live up to your co-signer duties and pay the debt.

Let me explain this to you once and only once.

When you co-sign someone's debt, you are saying, "I love this person so much that even if they fail to pay the creditor, I will assume all responsibilities for paying this balance IN FULL!"

Question, "If you weren't ready to pick up after your husband in the remote chance that he messed up, then why did you sign it?"

You have to learn to say no and mean it. If your husband wouldn't love you anymore after refusing to co-sign his debt, then guess what -- he didn't love you in the first place.

Hate to say it, but you are stuck like chuck.

You can try to sue him for damages in civil court.

Since you were probably mentally competent at the time you co-signed the debt, it is legally binding so long as the statute of limitations has not passed (see link below).

This is why I NEVER co-sign for people -- NOT EVEN MY OWN parents!

I will give them money or a loan, but I won't give anyone the opportunity to ruin my credit and good name! I can't wait 7 years for the hot mess to disappear from my credit report. That's way too long.

Family and money is a deadly cocktail.

Pay the debt off.

Spock (rhp)
what, specifically, did you co-sign for?

mostly, what you do is close all the existing charge accounts and then refuse to co-sign on any new ones.

loans on which nothing else can be added may be left alone for the while, but any kind of account on which he can borrow money for any purpose has to be closed and no further borrowing permitted.

I realize that this is very painful and somewhat unfair. His charges on the credit cards you close will still be your obligation. He'll probably then refuse to pay anything at all, leaving you holding all the debts.

It does, however, stop him from adding any more debt to your accounts and making the situation worse.

***
or you file for bankruptcy

and then you get a divorce.

You co-sign, you pay.

This sucks, but, you co-signed on the loan. Essentially you are equally responsible for the debt. Believe the only way to get you off is if he refiances. Is this a auto loan?
