cejones345 | They're going to sue me. What can I do? |
Citibank is going to sue me for my credit card debt. I'm a 22-year-old full time student without much money, working basically minimum wage. This is like a nightmare I can't wake up from. I'm completely depressed and I feel like this is the end of the world. Additional Details yes they said they're going to sue me. They said I will be served with a subpoena in 30 days. I think they're serious. |

I used to work in collections.
We literally had a list of things to say. Our particular collections company had around 100 people working....and turnover was big...if we could keep a person on the phones for a month, that was good. We had to make at least 10 calls an hour. The bank's computers would print out a list of names, addresses, phone numbers, and $$ the person owed. The banks would send us a list every week to work on. Right now you'd be on that list. There are over 5,000 on the list. And we'd pull all kinds of lines to get people to pay. Banks, hospitals, credit card companies, etc. would all sign a contract with us. Our job was to get people to pay their debt, money that they owed them. That "sue" line, well, we had to be careful with that one. The only place where I would use it was with college students and the elderly. They were vulnerable....you could scare them into paying something, somehow. That's what they'r doing with you. And when you say, "THEY" . You are getting a call from a guy/lady/or, high school dropout, who sits at a desk all day and makes phone calls. Kind of a boring job. I stayed there over a year. Our collections company paid well, lots of vacation, etc. Anything to get us to stay. It's not CitiBank itself. I mean CitiBank has approximately 4 million (4,000,000) credit cards out there. CitiBank was one of our accounts. They have millions of $$ they'r waiting for. They'll never get it all of course. But if we could get maybe 2% of that for them, they were happy, and they'd let us keep the contract...2% was good! And they'd have maybe 25 other collections agencies like us all across the U.S. doing the same thing. It's big business and we literally had about 250 banks asking us to help them. And actually there are really over a thousand credit card companies out there. It's a big business.
If I called you, got you scared!, I'd tell you that this is the 5th attempt we're looking at your account and if we don't see some activity from you, we'll put you on a default list, and if after 2 weeks we don't CONSISTENTLY see money coming in from you, we will give your account to our Legal Staff of lawyers and you might POSSIBLY expect them to call you before they would agressively work on your past due account. And, A Supervisor is going to watch your activity! THAT would get you going, worried!!! And if we got something $$, at least something, the bank's computer somewhere in New York city, or San Francisco, or wherever, would be happy - a computer happy?!?!
You're o.k. Do something though. Plainly, send them some money. Don't make them put you on a list. Well, I guess you're on one now. Eventually get off of it. Write them a brief note and say that you're concerned, worried, and promise to do something this month for start. And then DO IT within a week or two - right away! You HAVE to keep your financial promise. You're o.k. Sleep well, and don't worry TOO much. You're one of millions who have received "THE CALL" !!! |

You can't get blood from a rock. Don't sweat it. Don't get any more credit cards and just be REALLY HAPPY when they call and tell you they are going to sue you. They are just trying to intimidate you! Talk to your parents. |

THAT IS A PRESSURE POINT THEY HIT YOU WITH. ITS AN UNSECURED DEBT AND THERE IS NOT MUCH THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THERE IS NO COLLATERAL SUCH AS A CAR, ETC., THAT THEY CAN TAKE BACK. THEY WILL ALSO THREATEN TO CALL YOUR HUMAN RESOURCES DEPT OR PAYROLL DEPT. THIS IS B/S. THEY CAN NOT DISCUSS YOUR ACCOUNT WITH ANYONE BUT YOU AND IF THEY DO YOU CAN COUNTER SUE. THEY ARE JUST BULLYING YOU AND USING SCARE TACTICS TO MAKE YOU PAY UP OR FEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO. AT 22, IT WOULD BE BEST FOR YOU TO MAKE SOME KIND OF ARRANGEMENTS FOR PAYBACK..IT WILL LOOK BETTER ON YOUR CREDIT AND HELP YOU OUT IN THE LONG RUN. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT THEY WILL JUST HAVE TO CHALK IT UP TO BAD DEBT AND EVENTUALLY SELL IT TO ANOTHER COLLECTION AGENCY OR WRITE IT OFF..IF THEY CONTINUOSLY CALL YOU AT WORK YOU CAN TELL THEM THAT YOU HAVE ASKED FOR THEM NOT TO CALL AND THAT THEY ARE HARRASSING YOU. THAT USUALLY STOPS IT FOR A WHILE. THEY MAY BE TRYING TO COLLECT FROM YOU BUT THEY CAN NOT HARRASS YOU. |

We see this all the time...students or young adults get hold of a credit card and start racking up the charges along with the hefty APR and find themselves in a hole they can't get out of.
If you only knew then what you know now, right?
You need to STOP using any other credit cards you might have and work with Citibank to get this off your credit record which, right now is not looking too good.
At 22 you have many things you'll want to do, buy a car, get married, purchase a new house, etc. and for this you need to have good, well-established credit.
I only hope that other young people starting out in the credit world will take note of this and perhaps learn a lesson from what they read here.
Good luck! |

If I were you, and I've been there, see if you and Citibank can reach a settlement for a final payoff, sometimes they will negotiate the balance down so they can get paid something. If that doesn't work, see a credit repair person so they can negotioate a payment plan and your credit won't get trashed. Good Luck! |

Well i really HATE Citibank......the worst they can do is put a judgement against you and attach your wages.....i have seen this happen before.....you say you only get minimum wage...i would start looking for a better paying job,or try to get a loan from a family member.......i know it sucks...good luck!! |

They are NOT going to sue you. They use those scare tactics to TRY to make you pay.
They threatened the same thing with me when I was in college (I didn't have a job). Nothing came of it as far as the lawsuit, but it stayed on my credit report for 7 years. |
