mairzydoatz | USA in deep debt........? |
Have you any idea how deep in debt our nation is ??? What would happen if those to whom we owe money all of a sudden want to be paid ???? And what if no one would lend money anymore to this nation? How will we ever pay the debt ??? Your thoughts, please ......... |

If I owe $5 million and only earn $100,000. per year, I am deep in debt. If I owe $2,000. and earn 100,000. per year, I'm in pretty good shape. The second scenario is more in line with the situation regarding our national debt. Actually, we owe little money to other countries except for foreign aid, etc, i.e., my wife and I contribute yearly to the Salvation Army, but we owe them nothing. The far greater part of the debt is funding social programs which, once started, will NEVER be cut. ...that, and paying a life long salary plus expenses to every smuck who has ever been elected to a federal office. Mostly, the national debt is a handy club for whoever is speaking to beat whoever they are speaking against about the head with. |

The U.S. has total assets of about $111 trillion vs. it's 9 trillion in government debt. To scale that down, that's about $370,000 of assets for every citizen vs. $30,000 in national debt. That's why people have no qualms lending to us. They're pretty sure they'll get their money back.
Much of the government debt is issued without a call feature, meaning that the lenders can't demand to be paid now. So, if you buy a 10-year treasury, the government will not pay that treasury back for 10 years. You can sell that treasury on the open market to someone else if you decide to get rid of it, but the proceeds come from another lender not the government.
btw...The government owes my kid several hundred dollars. I don't expect for him to collect on it until his bonds mature, so that's at least some you don't have to worry about.

If other nations threaten to call in our due notes, all an astute President and Secretary of State need to do is threaten to *not* forgive many of the debts owed to the United States of America by the various nations around the world!
However, this is definitely *not* a valid excuse for our failure to become more energy independent! The environmental extremists and "tree-huggers" need to quit blocking the building of the necessary windmills and nuclear power plants, off-shore drilling and development of the north slope of ANWR.
However, we must not forget that *much* of the debt owed by United States of America is owed to its own citizens! |

our nations worth vs. our nations debt is so tiny its ridiculous, if our nation were a single person that persons mailbox would be loaded with credit card offers every day |

I just don't understand why so many people say " The U.S. is the greatest nation on earth." And then the same people say: " Oh, and we are horribly in debt." Can Anyone explain how can the two be possible? |

The USA in deep debt? GOOD!!! That means people are investing the US and their own futures by buying savings bonds & Treasury notes. (Though there ARE some better paying investments out there.)
Gee with the brainless, socialist Bush hating rant(s) here, I thought I'd accidentally wound up in the politics section. |

Yes, I think about this at times. The worst case scenerio, is that our beloved USofA could be overtaken and we could become enslaved. That is of course, if those who hold foregein interest in our businesses, hotels, banks, real estate ventures do not evict us first.............. |

Does anyone ever think about debt situation when we are handing out money to other nations. Our nation is always giving money to others when natural disasters happen we rebuild nations after war etc. Anytime anything like the tsunamis happen around the globe, the world expects us to pay to fix it. Maybe we are just going to have to learn to admit we're broke. Or is that why they keep handing out money that we don't have.. to keep from looking weak? |

Fully half of the national debt was added on by one man: George Bush. Since the beginning of our country George Bush has added as much debt as all the other presidents COMBINED over more than 200 years, and he did it in only 7.
He has 1 year left, in which time he may try to double it again.
Anyone who buys a savings bond is lending money to the US, as is anyone who buys Treasury securities. |
