Understanding my first credit card?!?!?
I currently have my first credit card, and i'm still a bit confused. I have 1,000 of available credit. After i pay my first months payment,or minimum payment does my credit get renewed and go back to 1,000?Or must i first completely pay off my exsisting balance?

no. 1000 is all they will loan you now. when you establish good credit (paying off the balance every month) this credit line will increase, but it doesn't really mean anything to you, it's for the compnay issuing the card.
just use credit cards sparingly, and never carry a balance.

Credit cards are bad news!! Hurry...get the scissors and cut it in half!

First of all, you should *always" completely pay off your credit card
every month. That minimum payment bullshit is how people go deep
in the hole. Yes, your available credit is 1000 minus your outstanding
debt.

Me
if your limit is 1,000 and you have charged 200 on your card you remaining balance is 800. then if you get thee bill and pay that 200, your balance is back to 0 and your available credit is 1,000 again- did that help?

If you pay it off completely, you go back to 1K of credit. For your sake, please pay off each month. Don't go for that minimum payment. You'll never get it paid off, it will grow a huge amount each month, and you'll never be out of debt. Do not pay interest, if you are smart.

Your total limit is 1,000 at any time.

NEVER just pay the minimum - they suck you in by telling you to only pay $40 on the 300 you spent... then tack on $15 in interest so frequently that over the next 2 years you will pay about $800 instead of 300 back.

People take out a card to build some credit, and wind up ruining their record. Put it on but then pay it ASAP, in full. And if you dont need it, say thanks but no thanks when they tell you as a reward for doing so well at 1K, they will give you 2 or 5 or 10.

$1000 available credit means that at any given time you have a maximum loan of $1000 from the bank that gave you the card. You could spend $1000 on your first day itself, but that is all you will get from the bank. You can not make any more purchases till you pay off a part of the loan. If, for example you pay off $200 this month, you will now owe the bank $800 + interest on the number of days you have kept the money after your statement date. And you will have about $200 available to you.

It means you can buy 1000 worth of things with your card. If you reach 1000 you have to pay some of it off, but you should pay it off as soon as you can so you don't have to pay interest.

Yes if you pay the full amount on time each month you go back to your $1,000. I taught my kids to deduct each credit card purchase from their check book and at the end of the month they where building credit and the money was in their checking account to pay of the balance of the credit card

It won't get renewed to $1,000. You should pay off the full oustanding balance to replenish the whole credit limit. However, the minimum payment is the amount to be added back to the available limit.

Just a piece of advice, don't make it a habit to pay the minimum. That's how most people started their credit nightmares. :)

The $1,000 of available credit is probably the total, from which is subtracted anything you owe. If you charge something worth, say $50 and you make only a $10 payment on it, you still owe $40 (plus interest) so you really have only about $960 available credit. You can usually find the real amount of available credit printed somewhere on your statement. When the credit card company tells you that you have $1,000 of "available credit," they never bother to explain that this is only true when you don't owe anything. You must have all balances paid off in order for the $1,000 to be totally available.

It is like simple math:

1, 000 balance
minus 100 dollar shirt
= 900dollar balance on card

900 balance
+ $50 payment
= 950 balance

Be oober careful with a CC. Interest will eat you alive. Don't go overboard either. I recommend calling the CC company and asking them to lower the balance to $200 or $300. You will still beef up your credit standing that way. Always pay more than the minimum payment each month - pay the whole amount owed if humanly possible.

it means you can only spend 1000 on it before you have to get a new one.
