Using a debit card as debit or credit?
What is the difference?

R T
From your standpoint, not much. Both will look like a debit transaction to your bank and the money will come out of the account immediately.

Debit cards communicate with your bank through the same systems as credit cards. If the seller hits the "debit" button, the terminal will require you to enter your PIN. If the seller hits the "credit" button, you may not be required to sign for a small amount (this varies). Also, some retailers may get hit with merchant fees for the transaction (this varies, too).

I've also run into some merchants who are not set up to process debit cards, but, if the card can be run as a credit card, they can process the transaction.

So, it really shouldn't make any difference to you; whatever works for the merchant.

It's confusing but really only two different processing methods. As debit, you have to enter your PIN. As credit, you sign for the transaction. In either case the money comes directly from your bank account.

None except you need to enter a pin with the debit option

Some banks used to charge for Debits, so people got into the habit of saying credit, some accounts also offer the option to use real credit instead of debit, as they are connected to both your credit card account witht he bank and your debit/chkg account with the bank.
In addition, It you use debit and insert your pin number the money is immediately taken out of your account and Credit used to delay it a day or so, float it, but that is not true of all banks today,
When most transaction are instant.

It sounds to me that you are asking about a Visa check card. This debit/credit card can be used in either manner and when you go to a store they often ask "debit or credit?" ...

The other posters are incorrect in saying that you will accrue a balance and be billed for it. Either way, the money will come directly out of your bank account. This difference has to do with whether you sign your name or enter a PIN. If you select "debit" then you will enter a PIN on their key pad. If you select "credit" then you will sign your name (in most cases).

The major difference is what the store has to pay when you use your card. If you select debit, the percentage fee that they pay is lower than if you select credit. Stores prefer that you use debit because it is cheaper for them to process - but the bank wants you to use credit because they make more money. That is why some banks will give you "points" for using the credit option.

Don't worry, with this type of card you will not accrue a balance and pay interest like some of the other posters said. That is an entirely different credit card.

I always use my debit card as a credit card. I don't want to take a chance on anyone getting my pin. It works the same in either case other than having to put in your pin.

Using it as a debit card, you need a pin to put into the machine at the register but as credit, you have to sign, which some say is safer. I've noticed it takes a little longer for the money to come out of my account when I use it as credit than if I use it as debit but that depends on the store where I use the card.

$andman
Bank of America debit card works either way,no extra charges to account...

Murzy
debit card transactions come directly out of your bank account whereas a credit card is billed to you

Cat
A debit card pulls money directly out of your bank account each time you use it.

A credit card means you accrue a balance, and then make payments on it.
