stefanie a | Very bad credit, any chance of getting an apartment? |
Ok, we have bad credit. We have both been unemployed recently due to company shut downs,(yay Michigan) and have gotten behind on credit card payments. My husband just got a great job offer in Chicago which pays extremely well. My question is, because of this bad run we've had, will we be able to get approved for an apartment? When he starts his job, we will be more than able to pay back our delinquencies and get back on track. We just need somewhere to live in the meantime! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Additional Details I've noticed many of the places we find of interest have a no deposit special. Would they just make us pay a deposit anyway?
His salary will be several thousand dollars a month. We have budgeted 1700 for an apartment. Because his salary will be so much more than our apartment price, will this help our luck any? |

If you physically have the money to pay rent, then some landlord will be willing to rent to you I think. Money talks. |

Might be a better idea to try for a house rental, owned by an individual. The apartment/condos base much on a credit check, and little on the individual. A home owner that wants to rent a house however, may be willing to understand, and take a chance. Even more so if first, last, and a deposit is no problem for you. Lots of them aren't even set up for a credit check, they base it on their feelings, and the check you write on move in. |

Try to go through an agency, someone you can talk to about the situation or try to get a corporate rental, meaning you rent it through your husband's company. Ask his HR department if they have anything like that.
Private landlords that rent apartments in houses may be more likely to talk to you as well. Good luck. I hope it all works out! |

I suggest if you can not find an apartment right a way that you try living at a motel where you can pay weekly until you have had the job for a while again. This gives you a place to live and prove to yourself you can afford the price.
Not all landlords check your credit but those apartments may not be as nice as others. Paying back the other owed bills from the past will help your credit. Keep on keeping until life turns better all the way credit history and all. This may take time but you can restart you credit history again.
Also I suggest you put back money to cover future situations like this happening or something else that might happen to cause money problems. There are money savings accounts that do pay good interest compared the normal interest rates. |

be honest when you go to look at the apartment just tell the land lord the situation you are in you just may be surprised what happens. |

IDK about your question but agree about Michigan having less decent jobs. |

Do you have proof that you were both laid off (such as a letter?) Does your husband have or can he obtain a letter of intent from the position in Chicago? If these items are handy, I would take them to potential landlords and just explain the situation. It seems to me that your situation was beyond your or your husband's control and I am sure you can find a sympathetic landlord. It is not as though you just blew off your bills, something came up that made it impossible to pay them for awhile.
Good luck to you. I sincerely hope you and your family are back on your feet as soon as possible. God Bless and take care! |

Big companies run a sofiscated credit check and they don't care what caused you to have bad credit.
However, some small private parties take your word for it and don't tell them your life story just ask to rent a place and pay up front. Even in mobil home parks, some people rent out their mobil home to people. They are not expensive and that would give you a chance to get caught up and fix your credit.
One person had terrible credit and no place would rent him an apartment. So he got a newspaper and looked through the rentals. Found a small guest house an older lady was renting out and she just took the rent money and said move in.
Or look for other small rentals such as a 2 bedroom house, that is being done by a private party. Just stay away from anyone who checks your credit on a computer.
Most older people still don't have one and they still trust people. Just don't volenteer the information. Just say I have the money and this looks like a nice place. Anyone has two friends or use your parents. That will give you a reference.
You may be suprised to know that most private land lords never call the reference, or the employer to see if you really work there.
I have seen applications that is full of information and people that never heard of the guy. Do that to enough people and you will find one that won't check to see if your telling the truth.
Let the woman go they are more apt to trust them. |

What I would do is get a list together of appts that you are interested in they call them and ask them how long have they had those appts vacant if its been several months than you might have a change of getting it with out a deposit or a small deposit and your credit will not matter if you tell them your situation they will understand because they just want to put some one in that appt, also what I would do is get a credit card use it for small purchases and pay it off at the end of the month that way you are not paying interest and are building your credit, check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com here you will be able to compare all major credit cards side by side on rates and rewards, GOOD, BAD OR NO CREDIT they have the right card for you. Good luck |

I don't know about the Chicago area, but here in Phoenix you can still get an apartment if you have the required deposit!
You should seriously consider cleaning up your credit! I had to do this when my ID was stolen and then I declared bankruptcy! My score is now up from a really rotten 486 to a good 729 in a little over a year!
I challenged the negatives in my report and got most of them removed and my website goes into this as well. You should read all of it and bookmark it or even get my RSS feed since I add new info a lot and often. I hope my experience and information help people who could use it! |

Yes but you'll have to give some extra money for security, maybe 4 months rent instead of the standard 3. |
