Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover?

It depends what you want. To generalize, the four different cards associations have different market positioning that can be summarized as the following:

MasterCard/Visa: Greatest worldwide acceptance
American Express: Good for frequent travellers and affluent customers
Discover: Good for customers wanting cashback rewards.

However, what really matters is the loyalty program that you get attached to the card. This depends on the bank that is issuing the card, not the cards association. You can find a cashback card that is branded with the Visa logo, the MasterCard logo, the Discover logo, or the American Express logo. The deal given by the bank is what you should use to determine what card you want.

Visa and Mastercard are the most widely-accepted, so they're best for a first credit card. Shop around to different banks in your area to find the one that will offer you the best interest rate.

Except for answer number 12, which is the most well thought out and direct response to your somewhat obscure and ambiguous initial question, all the other reponses are opinions. Is that what you are looking for? You could have easily done more research and CC comparisons on-line by typing "credit card comparisons" into Google or Y! Search and found concrete differences and advantages that may more pin-pointedly answer your concerns. My general response is similar to the answer provided regarding "It depends what you are looking for..." and that's just it, you have to know what you want, where you are at credit worthiness-wise, and determine which features, advantages & benefits adhere to your particular scenario. Then, your particular credit level will determine which one you will actually receive. As most agreed; MC & Visa are about equal, and depending on the bank that backs them and your credit score, your success of receiving them are pretty good. Costco won't take either, only AMEX, some restaurants won't take AMEX...After years of paying off debts and being meticulous about repaying cc bills, timely & for more than the min, I got all but Discover. Why? They have their reasons. I can live with all the credit I have been granted...Which card do you most aspire to have in your wallet? Seek it out and you'll eventually get it. Sorry to go on&on&on (12 step program for compulsive talkers)...I just had to share...Mahalo & Aloha!

None of the above? Debt-free is the way to be.

Magarnical - Visa is NOT everywhere you want to be, unless where you want to be is in DEBT!
