We need to build credit?
My husband and I were turned down for an FHA loan - they said we would need a co-signer. They did tell us, however, that we should get a couple of credit cards to build credit. We have no current debt and would like to keep it that way. Was this bad advice? All we have right now is a bank check card Visa. What would be a good credit card to go with? What are some bad companies? Any personal experiences?

If you not going to carry any debt, its not that important
Make sure there is no Yearly fee
Get it through your bank

Buy all your gas on it and make sure you pay it off before the date

The lender is looking for 3 credit accounts, with at least one "deep" credit reference.

Get 2 cards as best you can find them. Be careful not to have too many banks pull your credit report. Next, get a deposit loan in a large amount. This is where you borrow funds to hold on deposit, make interest payments at less than 5%, and then give back the deposit to pay off the loan whenever you are ready. It puts your credit through the ceiling. You can get it at creditloader dot com.

The bank check card with Visa logo is not a "real" credit card. Since the lender is asking you to build up your credit, and if I am correct, it sounds like both your and your husband never open any credit cards, department credit cards, or even a gas card before? That means, you have NONE credit history AT ALL. So the lender is correct to ask you to apply for credit card to build up your credit. Go to bankrate.com, then go to the credit card section, read their unbias reviews on all the credit cards. But if you never have any credit card before, I would suggest your go thru your bank (if they offer credit card with LOW interest rate) first. Good luck! BTW, opening credit cards does NOT mean that you have to carry a balance, you just need to pay on time. =) That would help you build up your credit, but it takes times.

I would suggest you get a copy of your credit report and see your scores and other information

If you want to apply for credit card, trying getting one with low interest, no annual fees and rewards. Capital One, Discover, American Express, Chase and Bank of America are good card companies.

You need to build your credit somehow and credit cards are one of the ways to do it. It is said that you should have 3 lines of credit open in order to establish credit. And a lender for a home loan needs to see that you pay your bills. His advice isn't necessarily bad-it's realistic.

get a credit card. i would suggest getting one through your bank (while your at it a debit card wouldn't hurt to have either)
or you could contact any major credit card company and apply for one, you will probably start with a low limit 500-900 (you would want to find one with no annual fee) after you get one, use it, pay it off, repeat, and don't carry a balence (that dosen't help your credit)

or you can go lease some thing (best buy) aka payment plan. dosen't have to be some thing $$, just make all the payments on time (or pay it off early, although this dosen't help/hurt your credit it saves you som $ on intrest)

or get a loan (AT A REAL BANK, money tree is not a bank!) although you may need a cosigner, basicly the same as the lease

those are the three simplist ways i can think of

First get a copy of your credit report and your beacon or credit score. Read and learn about the scoring system and how it affects what you can buy and at what interest rate.
I think 680 is about average.
Then get two or three minor credit cards (Sears or Zellers) with low credit limits of around $300 to $500 dollars. Do not spend over 30% of your credit limits as anything over this limit on your cards affects your score in a negative way - the score will go down. If you can't get a credit card, apply for a 'secured' card from somone like Capital One. You will need to provide them with an amount they can keep as security.
Maybe a small loan will also help you to establish your credit. I can't urge you enough to read, read, read everything you can on credit and use this yahoo forum to ask questions.
Good luck !
