A credit union is an institution owned by the “members” or customers. Contrast this with banks where the customers are just customers. Banks answer to profitability – usually shareholders own a bank and expect financial performance from bank management.
Credit unions are nonprofit organizations that strive for service over profitability. Note that I said that credit unions are nonprofits, however they are not charities. Credit unions must make sound financial decisions.
Credit union deposits are insured very much like your bank deposits. The organization that insures the two types of institutions is different. However, the quality of insurance is the same in my mind.

I think one of the differences is that they don't have business accounts. We were going to join one, but my husband needs a business account and they said they don't offer them. That is one of the reasons how they keep their rates lower. I think... |

A credit union is like a bank in every respect I know of or can think of except:
While a bank is typically owned by shareholders who seek to profit against those who have accounts with the bank...
A credit union is owned jointly by those whose accounts it holds. The depositors in a credit union ARE the shareholders.
I think credit unions have some restrictions as to what investment vehicles they are allowed to offer. That has probably resulted from some kind of powerful banking lobby in Washington D.C. that has very little to do with how you and I actually want to manage our finances. |

It is a financial co-operative owned and run by its members in accordance with strict laws and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
The members of the Credit Union save together in low risk funds set by law and lend each other money for useful purposes.
Your money is placed in secure investments of low risk. Interest is earned on it for the Credit Union.
The main purpose of the Credit Union is to encourage regular savings and make loans to its members at low rates of interest. These loans are repaid by regular instalments that include interest.
The Credit Union insures the lives of its savers and, depending on age, this insurance can be up to twice the value of shares you hold. Children’s savings are held in a separate account.
All money held by the Credit Union is insured against dishonest acts. |

There are two types of financial institution that use “credit union” in their title. A credit union for the most part is a bank. They try to appeal that they serve the community (city or county) rather than the national masses. A credit union may offer better rates on loans, easier terms, better interest on savings, or lower interest on credit cards. Some credit unions view their customers as members. As a member, you have the privilege to cast your vote to elect board members and committee members.
A federal credit union is everything I just mentioned. Federal credit unions carters to the community, offers better rates, offers better customer service (including monitoring for questionable transactions to your account), and encourage you to vote for those who will run the institution. However, federal credit unions have stricter member qualifications. Here are the requirements for my federal credit union, CMT: “Membership is open to everybody who lives, works, or attends school or college in Solano County.” |

A credit union is a group of people who get together to form a money lending business, but only to each other. It is almost a way of saving. Everone pays into it, and when an emergency comes along, you borrow the money from the union. It is then paid back at, normally, a very low interest rate. |
