This is one of the most common questions on this board.
How do I build/establish credit?
First off you need to be educated about how credit works in the U.S. Every credit decision a lender makes is driven by FICO credit scores. You can go to www.myfico.com and look in the Credit Education section to learn how FICO credit scores are determined. To build your credit you have to place positive credit items on your file that will report positively for 6-12 months minimum. If you want your credit to be in the Excellent category (FICO score 720+) then your goal should be to have 3-6 revolving accounts(dept. store, gas cards, Visa. etc.) and 1-2 installment loans(car, mortgage) that are reporting positively.
I would start out with a Bank of America or Wells Fargo secured Visa card. Both banks have great programs with low annual fees, low starting amounts ($300.00) and no junk fees. After 12 months of positive on time payments you will graduate to an unsecured status. Then you will probably be approved for other cards such as dept. store and gas cards.
By the way, having a checking account with a VISA debit card is an excellent idea for managing your finances but it will in no way effect your credit score.
Good Luck |

Getting one through your bank might be a good choice, most have special credit card program designed to help young people boost their credit.
But as long as you are careful with it and remember to pay off what you owe, (on time, every time, [in full]), you shouldnt have to worry. |

As you have no credit history established, your best bet is to go your bank and get a debit card. As their risk is low for these cards, the standards are not overly rigorous. What you want to do with this card is never overspend it. The payment comes straight out of your checking account and they will lay some heavy overdraft fees on you and put a report in to the credit bureau.
If you use the card wisely the odds are good a slew of credit card applications will start coming in after three or four months. After reading the fine print pick one and only one of these and repeat the process of prudent spending - meaning don't overuse it and pay it down each month.
Assuming you have a income source and don't move from place to place six months more months of good credit behavior should do the trick. |

My first credit card, in college was a Capital One Gold Card. It gave me a small credit limit, $500, but in no time at all, the limit increased with timely payments and not paying late. Also, you might want to try a department store credit card. I too had one shortly after my first credit card was obtained in college. |

look at bankrate.com to compare. i found a card even better than MBNA, chevy chase card, but i was sent an offer. be sure to pay it off every month if you can, they would love to take 29%! many many thanks to your husband, by the way. bush's mistakes have nothing whatsoever to do with your husband's incredible honerable service to the country |

Personally, i would start with a visa check card.Simply open a checking account. If all goes well with that, then your options will increase. Just be very cautious, think of it as "Would I buy this now at this price if I were paying cash?" That may help keep spending in perspective. Also, always check interest rates. Don't believe commercials, either. Check the better business bureau ratings on any company before doing business with them. That may save you alot of time, money, and headaches in the future. thank you |
