10% or less is do-able with a good credit score.
Don't use a card that is 15% or more. The interest will eat you alive.
When you use your card -- make sure you make your payment on time - every month! And the longer you have the card the better.
Sometimes credit card companies will try and sneak your interest rate up for no reason. If that happens - and you make your payment on time every month and have been with them a while - you can call them up and tell them to put that interest rate back down. Usually you have to threaten to transfer the balance from that card to a lower card. Tell them you are going to throw that card in a drawer and never use it again. If you are a good customer - the threat works and they'll put that interest rate back down.
If you have not been a good customer - missed payments etc. They don't care and you have no leverage.
The reason I say - put the card in a drawer as opposed to closing the account -- a large % of your FICO Score (credit score) is based on how long you have had the card so you do more harm to your score by closing the account. That's why you don't threaten to close the card -- just never use it again. |
