There's lots of small steps to building your credit (ie: opening a checking account, taking out a personal loan from your bank), but at some point you'll need to get a credit card to take your credit to the next level. If you have no credit history, here are some options to help you get started:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/poor-credit.html

Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards, they'll help you prove your credit worthiness and build your credit score over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to qualify for better offers with lower APR's and less fees. But for now, these are your options...

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

This is not what you want to hear, but don't start credit. Instead of getting into debt so that it will be easier to get into more debt in the future, get ahead of the game financially. Start putting away money just like you were making a car payment, but make it to your bank account. When your present car craps out, you'll have money there to buy something that's a step up from what you have. Watch this video about vehicle purchases and how dumb it is to drive a brand new one. http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/lms/drive_free/

Anyway, instead of building your credit....build your wealth. It's a lot easier to built wealth than it is to pay off debt. Do yourself a huge favor and go borrow, Total Money Makeover, from the library. It's by Dave Ramsey. Start your financial life out smart. Live like no one else now (on the cheap) so that you can truly live like no one else (with plenty of money and no debt) later on.

If you have about $2000.00 that the bank could use for collateral, get a loan for 24 months and pay it off in 12. That's how I got started 40 years ago.

People have given their answers, now I'll give mine. Getting a secured credit card would be a good way to start out. Granted, you would have to place a deposit upfront in order to get a credit limit of the same amount, but this works in your favor becuase the deposit gains interest while you're building credit and you can also increase the credit limit by adding to the deposit. Usually after a year of paying on time and keeping the balance low by making small purchases, the deposit is given back, and either the card converts to a regular card or a better card's offered. I posted links to some secured credit cards below

Another way is to enroll with PRBC to build credit by reporting payments like rent, utlities, cellphone, insurance to name a few bills that people pay religiously every month, but never seem to build credit becuase it doesn't report on the 3 major credit bureaus. That's where PRBC comes in. They feel that rent should be just as if not more important than a credit card when it comes to building credit. They make this possible by recording payments like this and others and score it in a report that can be considered with your regular credit reports to give a more complete picture of what your payment history is. There's a lot more in this website that I might have left out, I strongly suggest checking it out! It will do nothing but help

Thanks for listening

try getting a credit card with a small limt, one that you can easily pay off with in the time period. Charge small thins like $20 for gas or lunch at the restaurant, things that you can pay off.

Start off with a credit card with a credit line of about $200 - $400, something small. Then just charge small things each month l and make sure you pay it back in full and on time.

Another good way to build credit is to get a store credit card, maybe to your favorite clothing store or book store that offers them. These kind of cards are usually pretty easy to get for those just starting off building credit. Once again just make sure you charge small things, pay it off in full, and on time.
